About SGM

Hello, I'm Sean! I've been an avid fan of RPGs ever since I can remember, and I have been a GM for just as long. I have an extensive background in acting and improv, a passion for game design, and a love for storytelling. Being a Gamemaster is a wonderful opportunity to combine all of the disciplines I have dedicated so much of my life to. In my time GMing, I have run for a diversity of players. I've run games that have challenged and excited veterans as well as captivating and welcoming new players. I have run for people of many backgrounds, identities, and orientations, and I hope I can do the same with many more!

I got started GMing...

during quarantine; I listened to a lot of XPtoLevel3 and fell down the GMing rabbit hole

My favorite system of all Time is

Mutants and Masterminds. I haven't gotten to really run it that much, but I'm impressed with how comprehensive and intuitive the system is for creating custom superpowers

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

"Linear but Loose (also rlly good combat)"

How SGM runs games

My GMing style has most often been compared to Brennan Lee Mulligan. I don't watch a lot of Dimension 20, so I'm not quite sure how accurate that is, but I certainly take after a lot of prolific GMs in my strong belief of incorporating character backstory into the world I create. I would much rather have a player with several pages of backstory tying them to the world than one with none at all. Needless to say, I value roleplay to a great degree. One might make the very reasonable assumption that since I value roleplay as a GM, I have a tendency to throw mechanics and rules to the wayside. This is not the case for me; I like to have extensive knowledge of the games I run. Whether that entails reading the rulebook cover to cover or watching live play, I strive to gain deep insight into the systems I run, for within that insight there are opportunities to bolster the story me and my players tell.

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...

James Gunn; I actually took inspiration for a combat from one of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

I once ran a session...

without a character sheet! I was running DnD and the players forgot their sheets, so we ran this detective session where each player got two +3s, two +2s, and two -1s to whatever skills they chose. It was surprisingly efficient, and it got the players out of their heads!

Rules are...

there to facilitate the fun. If a rule gets in the way of the players' fun or it slows the pace of the game down, it sometimes just doesn't need to be there

SGM's ideal table

At my table, I greatly value the trade-off between the dramatic and the comedic. I love a good serious moment just a much as a great funny moment, and I think they both serve eachother well when in balance. I love to help new players learn new systems, and I especially enjoy challenging veterans with my own style of running the game!

I love it when a player

is creative! I once ran a combat where a boss (left on the banner) controlled a ghost that, when hit, reflected any attack. He was invincible until a player dropped a smoke bomb and another player snuck up from behind with a taser before he could react! It was sick!

I think min/maxing...

is perfectly fine! I once ran a DnD game for a paladin player. She got two critical hits, smited on both of them, and instantly defeated my miniboss! Of course, the encounter was trivialized, but the memory of that remains unfrogettable!
