About Robert Grant

I specialise in running Dungeons & Dragons adventures and I like to inject a bit of humour into them all. I follow the nr1 rule that "D&D is about having fun!" I have been doing fantasy games all my life and love making stories for others, and enjoy seeing my players interact. I like to get to know my players and their characters and tweek the story to give them something personal to chew on. For my homebrew adventures I like to use popular cultural references in my games, especially when naming monsters (like a quiz) and crazy NPCs. I use Discord, Owlbear Rhodeo and Theatre of the mind with some AI images to make the experience more immersive. I really like running Play-by-Post adventures as we get to know each other over a longer period of timme and on a daily basis. For me running games is like spending time with people who enjoy each others creativity.

I got started GMing...

My young son was introduced to D&D and got very excited. So I nurtured his interest and got hooked myself. I remember many hours playing Games Workshop products as a kid. So I started DM'ing to give him more opportunity to play..... But mostly because I really like doing it and love telling stories.

My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be

The "How to navigate the sea" system The "How to survive on a desert Island" system The "How to escape a desert Island" system Plus lots of dice. As some decisions should not be entrusted to your own judgement

My favorite books are

Sir Terry Pratchett the Discworld Series. Also, Douglas Adams and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Love humour and comedy fiction. Comes through in my games a lot if you're doing a comedy adventure with me. I do have a serious side for high fantasy with Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman books

How Robert Grant runs games

I like my players to have fun, encourage them to be creative and become stars of the story. So I like lots of "rule of cool", and interesting solutions. I reward my players for noticing details in the environment and good RP. I like to create rich descriptive scenes and interesting NPC's, I sometimes add AI artwork. All combat has some homebrew involved to keep players on their toes, and I have "house rules" to make the game flow faster. Battle is challenging, and i like to spill blood on both sides. I like to create excitement, humour and tension in my games and move them along fast, so as not to get bogged down My PBP games post daily and I understand if players have bad days and cannot contribute. I like to keep a good flow going to make custom items for players to RP with.

I deal with rules issues by...

Looking at my own mistakes and owning them. Speaking to the player(s), try to work out problems, so everyone can have fun and have less issues in the future. Keep things on track and rolling in enjoyment

My games focus on...

Player enjoyment. Got a wacky character idea? I love it already. The best thing about D&D "it's all about having fun with friends"

Rules are...

A great structure to build an exciting adventure where everyone knows what's possible and what isn't. The Rule of Cool rains supreme and never lets rules bog down an adventure in tiny details or spoil fun.

Robert Grant's ideal table

My table is about players who help each other, overcome problems, help with rules. Excited to play and looking forward to testing out their characters. The vibe is fun, cooperation and having a good time. Players who like writing and RP thrive in my PBP games with each other, they are into the journey with each other and myself daily for a in depth adventure

I am for a vibe that's...

People are having fun, taking a break from reality and encouraging creativity and building online friendships with players. Also understanding that real life can kick your arse sometimes and we all need patience and compassion

I love it when a player

Uses their environment and inventory and other character assets for creative solutions to problems or encounters

I think metagaming...

A reality to accept that characters are controlled by players who could have years of experience in playing D&D, and it is a game afterall. So I try and give everyone a new experience and make combat encounters with twists and the unexpected. The Rat is not an ordinary rat
