About Jolene

Howdy doodle! My name is Jolene. I'm a 22 year old college English major, writer, and an avid GM! I've been playing TTRPGs for over ten years now, when a very excited twelve year old me started attending DND sessions at my local game store. Since then, my passion for the hobby has only grown as I've experienced all sorts of different systems with my friends over the years. Some personal favorites are Fabula Ultima, Lancer, and Girl By Moonlight. In terms of other interesting stuff about me, I have a pet chinchilla named Shadow, I'm a trans lesbian, I have far, far too many plushies, and I hope to be a writer some day. My favorite game series is Xenoblade Chronicles, and a lot of my games draw inspiration from it and other personal favorites. My favorite character who I've ever played is probably Three, my Shifter Barbarian from a Dungeons of Drakenhiem campaign I played years ago. They were a magical experiment fighting to free their family from the mad scientist who created them, and they also allowed me to explore gender in a really important way at a really crucial time in my life. I'll always remember them and their journey fondly for that. Other than that, I don't really know what else to say about myself, other than that I hope to meet you in one of my games! ^-^

I got started GMing...

I got my start DMing, if you can believe it, making a little homebrewed Kirby TTRPG. It was terrible, I was thirteen; but it's the foundation that everything I have done after was built upon.

My favorite shows/movies are

I always have a hard time narrowing down my favorite shows and movies, but some of the ones definitely on the list are things like Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, She-ra and the Princesses of Power, and My Adventures with Superman.

How Jolene runs games

As a GM, I am someone who emphasizes rule of cool, roleplay, characters and stories above pretty much anything else. One of my longest running players and one of my best friends once described my style of GM-ing as "Yes, and...", and I believe that to be quite accurate. I believe that the rules are very useful tools for conveying the narrative, especially in the systems I prefer, but that they should never supersede the narrative. Thus if a player comes to me with a rules alteration or pitch, and I think it would just be cooler or more interesting to do things that way, that is something I am more than open to. My stories tend to focus on character drama, and I do my best to interweave everyone's backstories as key narrative elements, so that everyone feels like they have an equal stake in the plot.

My favorite trope is...

By far my favorite trope is found family. I always find it comforting that we are more than blood, that the people who love us, regardless of who they may be, are the most important people in our lives.

Rules are...

In my opinion, rules are meant to enhance the experience of playing a TTRPG, not dominate them. I like to stick to the rules of various games as a scaffolding for the experience, but if it'd be cooler or more interesting in the group's eyes to deviate from them, that's just what I'll do.

Jolene's ideal table

My ideal table is one of people who are as invested in the characters and world as I am; people who get lost in the stories that we're telling as a group, and are excited to see them grow over the course of a game. I am a very roleplay first GM in that regard, though I do recognize the importance of a good combat encounter in many systems. Generally speaking, the vibe that I seek to cultivate at my table is one of a mini community of people who all want to be a part of creating a shared story experience together. More than that, I want players who like to make friends with their other players, and foster a real sense of group cohesion.

I love it when a player

I love it when a player is willing to "yes, and..." with me. Nothing is more gratifying as a GM to have a constructive back and forth with my players with the out come being awesome scenes, lore, and world building.
