How Mike / Maydragon runs games

I run a TTRPG Discord server where I teach people how to play online and run games for all skill levels. I'm a long-term in-person 5e D&D DM who has been playing TTRPGs on and off since the 90s. In the summer of 2025 I started using Discord to play D&D and Daggerhart online and I love it! In-person I run very lightweight theater-of-the-mind games. No map. Lots of handwaving. Maybe a few tokens to indicate distance and direction. I like to keep things simple. I don't even use a DM screen. Online, I try to mimic that as much as possible. Discord for voice (but any VC will do). Gamescape.app for a map/tokens. Freshcutgrass.app for rolling dice. I've used other VTTs but I prefer the simple stuff. I want the game to live in our imaginations!

Laid back. I prefer to use simple theater of the mind descriptions of characters, places, and combat encounters, a very simple map with a few tokens often goes a long way when describing distances and relative positions.
