About Logan Gooden

Hey there! I'm a social studies teacher and historian from Minneapolis. I have experience Gm-ing Dungeons and Dragons 5e, Star Wars: Rebel Alliance, and Kids on Bikes. My tables tend to be driven by character narratives, and I love building worlds together with my table.

I became a GM because

Stories are so important to me. I've learned so many skills as a teacher that lend themselves to facilitating collaborative storytelling, and there's nothing I love more than learning about the world and ourselves with a table of players who are also looking to learn by following truth in narrative.

When I'm not running games I'm...

usually with my friends! In my time alone, I play video games (yeah, I 100% Silksong) and read. I'm a big fan of nonfiction, especially about history or political science through a decolonial lens.

How Logan Gooden runs games

I love a world versed in history, with a variety of activities to keep all sorts of players engaged. At my table, you'll find high-stakes spectacles setting the backdrop for worlds driven by material conditions and the ways that people care for each other. I prefer theater of the mind to highly detailed software and minis, binding the world only with the extent of our imaginations.

I prep by

asking my players what they plan to do next. Over-the-table communication is crucial to how I plan because I never want to be caught completely unprepared for what a player wants to do. That said, I love to improvise, so taking wild swings if they're authentic in the moment is highly encouraged.

Logan Gooden's ideal table

I prefer a table of players who see role playing games not just as games, but as an intellectual exercise. Learning from each other and from the truth in an authentically-followed narrative is something I find incredibly fulfilling, and it will create a strong community at the table.

I love it when a player

wants to build more than their character. One of my favorite players came to me with an idea for a revolutionary, and we got to decide important elements of the history of our world together. Player agency at my table should never end with the character sheet.

My table is not the place for...

people looking to play D&D like it's Skyrim. Player characters have limits, and actions have consequences, because failure and struggle are essential to creating interesting stories.
