About Midnight

I am a hardworking perfectionist who spends hours trying to master whatever job I'm working on. I've run games, started building my own game and have spent hundreds of hours watching things like "How to Be a Great GM" and listening the Brenan Lee Mulligan remind me what Gming is all about. When I first started DMing, so many years ago, I was pretty critical of myself. Now? I struggle to recognize that person in the mirror. The confidence, the skill, the knowledge and the creative ways I run my games? It's like I've discovered a completely new person... I run my games like a movie, jumping between scenes and making adjustments on the fly, because my NPC's are alive. They have hopes, fears and dream; just like anyone else. I want you to leave my table after each session thinking, "For a few hours a week. Nothing matters. The chores are on hold, the struggles of my day job can be left at the door and I, WE can be heroes."

My favorite books are

Across the Nightingale Floor- Gillian Rubinstein Fearless "book 1"- Francine Pascal Green Thumb- Rob Thomas Rats- James Herbert Raptors- Paul Zindel the Maximum Ride "series"- James Patterson

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

FLEXIBLE- I love to let players "Do the thing" and see what happens next. PLAYFUL- I can't help but make a few light-hearted NPCs, even in a grimdark world, light shines through... INSPIRING- My dream is for each of my players to one day have the confidence to run there own games.

When I'm not running games I'm...

I'm working on my own system design. It has come so far and many of my players love it! I find that my design really screams action-packed and my players enjoy the cutscene combat finishers baked into the game's rules. I hope one day to run that system right here, for anyone who wants it!

How Midnight runs games

I believe that anything is possible. I understand the importance of rules and how they help to shape gameplay, but I want to live in a world where the impossible is possible. I remember the first time I realized that I wanted to be a GM. A friend of mine wanted to be a werewolf and our DM said, "Werewolves are evil and feral. Once you turn I would have to take control of your character." However, I always wondered, why? In order to really create a story together, I need you to believe in the impossible. I need you to let your imagination run wild. I'll deal with the rules, when necessary, and together we'll make low stakes problems fun and playful. High stakes combat will have consequences, and when we role the dice, it's either hilarious or impactful and sometimes both. I run campaigns through the eyes of the NPC, rather than have a plot and add NPCs. I want to know why Dr Evil is trying to blow up the dam, even if my players never learn those motivations. If I were to pick one thing I do best? It would be roleplay; feeding off my player's energy and creating a flowing narrative based on the actions of the PC against the backdrop of the NPC's motivations.

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...

Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen and Simon Langton. Jackie's got my wild action scenes. Donnie's got my impossible super hero kung fu scenes. Simon's got my down to earth character interaction scenes.

I once ran a session...

Where the players each played two separate modern-day characters; spec ops soldiers and high school girl's volleyball players. Nothing funnier than watching a player's switch soldier in combat to teenagers at a volleyball game. It ended with the girls trying to escape an invading Treants. 10/10

When it comes to voices

I love the grizzled veteran, days from retirement. I enjoy adding that one villain that happens to be a surfer dude. I can't help but add the sassy maiden; who may or may not be 3x's better than you...

Midnight's ideal table

My ideal table is a group of friends who struggle to find time for each other in the real world, so they spend a few hours a week going on adventures; through dungeons, battling bandits, shopping for Rickie's new wardrobe? Who cares what they're doing? They together! For a few hours a week, the world is their oyster "Daylight is Theirs to Command!" The group that doesn't mind a few interruptions because Lou has to change the baby or Evan needs to check the door. Life happens; I get that. I don't want the trained actors of Critical Role; I want the laughter of players who can't believe Gilbert fell through the ceil and landed on his target without alerting the guards. I love to laugh, love to smile, love to listen to my players take off on an adventure of their very own. I'll get it started; but the journey? In my mind, the journey was always meant for you...

I think it's a red flag when players...

Complain about not getting their way or their PC failing. I'm reasonable when making rulings. I prefer "Yes but" rather than "no". As such, when I say no, I usually mean it. Granted, I'm flexible and love logic. A logical answer will often sway me. In short, its a game, so just trust me ruling...

I think metagaming...

Should obviously be a part of playing. Characters are imaginary; so players talking about what characters will do is completely reasonable! Every once in a while, I will cut the metagaming out for a scene, especially if that specific player struggles to make decision; got to let that player grow!

I think min/maxing...

Belongs in every game, even if some of the players don't min/max. Combat isn't everyone's bread and butter and some people feel powerless in their life. So what if they kill 30 mooks? Let em! There should be scenes for everyone, let the min/max player have their time in the sun!
