About 🐢 Kappl (Bobby GM)

There are few things I love more than the collaborative storytelling, insane creativity, and barely controlled chaos that occurs in tabletop role-playing games. I come from a writing and performance background, and I come to each session well-prepared but ready to improvise, and while I'm very tech-forward (love me some bells and whistles, and explosions), I'm equally comfortable with a map drawn in the moment, pure theatre of the mind, and descriptive play-by-text posts. I've been running games for about 20 years, in several different game systems, and have hosted players from multiple countries with ages that range from 4 to 70+, with a wide variety of personalities, idiosyncrasies, and specific requirements (whether they be due to age, neurodivergence, or something else). Don't know the system? Intimidated by role-play? No problem. I am happy to help you have an awesome time while you get comfortable.

I started running games because...

I love telling stories and building worlds, and am convinced our world would be a better place if everyone had more opportunities to play wild games of pretend, constrained only by agreed-upon rules and traitorous math-rocks. Also, it is way more fun to story with people who match your crazy.

People are always surprised when I tell them

I grew up taking a boat to get to my house and had a mountain for my back yard -- and then somehow decided to move to a place with no mountains, no salt water and that has been colder than Mars on multiple occasions. The answer is love, of course (it would have to be).

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Generally, I get accused of being an imaginative storyteller or welcoming and inclusive. Some would say that more sleep would probably stem the tide of NPCs pouring out of me. One or two are definitely convinced I would make a great super-villain...

How 🐢 Kappl (Bobby GM) runs games

I love a good story. The world's story; the adventure; your characters' backstories and the tale they're telling together; and, of course, the story that the dice tells for us all. Expect games that take place in living, breathing worlds, where your choices, both past and present, matter. Expect an inclusive, patient, and welcoming table experience (all skill levels), dangerous enemies, heartfelt moments, and an open appreciation for clever solutions and insane plans of action. Expect the rules to matter, but that what serves the story and the moment in the most satisfying way may matter more. And expect a dizzying amount of NPCs, each with their own unique voice (and likely a weirdly rendered accent) to bubble up from the deep recesses of my mind. I do try to keep them down, but they often don't listen. Above all -- and this is the most important bit -- expect to have fun.

I deal with rules issues by...

allowing a few minutes for discussion or a quick look-up, and then make a decision that I think is fair in the moment, and keeps things moving. If more is needed, I am happy to discuss it after the game and work out what makes the most consistent sense, and is the most fun for everyone.

My games focus on...

character actions and decisions in a living, breathing world. You don't need to engage in every hook or world event, but those things do still happen, and your choice to engage or move on makes a difference. Your story is yours. Your choices matter, and consequences are real.

When it comes to voices

ohh, I got a few... They may sometimes contain accents of questionable quality, but you will definitely know which of the many (many!) characters you meet is talking, when you're talking to them. I'm not a voice-actor, but I do have a good time. :D

🐢 Kappl (Bobby GM)'s ideal table

I lean into role play, but don't worry, I don't expect you to release your inner theatre-kid or anything. Whatever your level of comfort with role play, you are welcome, and we can play together. Unless it's the game everyone wants to play, I can't guarantee there will be a fight every session (that really depends on party choices) -- but when fights do come up, they will be tactical, possibly contain unexpected elements, and will have room for everyone to shine and do some cool stuff. I truly love a diverse table with a wide variety of players and play-styles. People embracing their differences and figuring out how best to work together, both as players and characters, just makes for a better story.

I love it when a player

wants to do something insane. I love figuring out how to make it work (if it makes sense), and what the potential consequences would be if it goes horribly wrong -- and how to make even the consequences fun.

I think min/maxing...

is fine. If it's fun for you to tweak your character to the craziest build you can, go for it! I'm all about finding interesting ways to challenge you -- just be sure that you are just as interested in bringing the fun for everyone else at the table, too.
