About Japes

I’m known as Japes (jay-ps) IRL, which is a nickname based on my given name, Jean-Paul. My daughter Abi, is in the LGBT community and seeing her now, as she and her partner buy a house together, makes me feel really proud of what she’s achieved. I feel that every game should be a safe place for all of us to be who we are, and try something that might be seen as ‘off the wall’. I’ve loved the escapism that TTRPGs offer ever since I first GM’d D&D as a child. Since then, I’ve played many different systems and learned one thing above all else: these games are at their best when everyone is having fun. That first game I ran for a group of friends was an interesting experience, and much has improved since then. Please do thank the multiverse of gods that’s true. My initial online games started in 2020, and what began as a single table quickly grew into many. Some of those players, are still playing in my games years later. My favourite D&D character idea is a fairy barbarian who’ll fly over the heads of friends and growl at the enemy, who’d better not laugh at her… So do bring your curiosity, your creativity, and whatever character excites you most to the table, whether that’s a 1920s Black female FBI agent in Call of Cthulhu, something made from sapient pearwood in Discworld, or some bonkers D&D character. Your character is the gateway to your adventure, and I’m here to see you enjoy it.

My favorite books are

- The Wasp Factory, which has a macabre storyline - Mort, set in the Discworld and features Binky, who's Deaths' horse. - The Hobbit and honestly if you're into fantasy games and not read it, its well worth your time. - The whole series of Dune, which is a very gritty read.

My favorite system of all Time is

Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Adventures in Ankh- Morpork.* This is due to the laugh’s everyone has around the table. * This may well change again.

How Japes runs games

I’ll be rooting for the party to succeed but far from making it easy. Where’s the fun in being given the win on a plate. This will mean every challenge and choice matters. As you move through the adventure, you'll have adapted where needed, and triumphed together. You’ll know you’ve earned that victory and it makes the sweeter knowing it wasn’t given to you. These games are about having fun together and I love hearing the table erupt in laughter during ridiculous moments - you’d better believe I’ll be laughing as well. No matter the system, critical fumbles at the worst possible timing can be hilarious. Those perfect rolls or ideas that save the day will have everyone cheering. New people to TTRPGs, will find that they’re very welcome. I’ve been told and I feel the reviews back this up, that I’m patient, happy to explain rules as we go, and this aids you to knowing how things work. If you’re looking for immersive stories, meaningful choices, great role play and a table that celebrates both chaos and triumph, you’re in the right place.

Rules are...

Rules are the framework for the adventure. Which allow you to try things you might never do in real life. I run 'Rules As Intended' with a helping of 'Rule of Cool' for this very reason. There is a breaking point and that's when its not fun for all.

Japes's ideal table

I love running games for a diverse mix of people that brings together players from different countries, backgrounds, experiences and alon the way become friends. What matters most is that everyone feels welcome and is having a good time. I encourage players to lean into their characters’ strengths and flaws, in a way this gives you license to express your creativity through roleplay. You could also add some flair and personality to actions or during combat. Your ideas and style are just as important as the mechanics of the game, and the best moments often come from everyone building them together. Every table I’ve played at has had those unforgettable moments where something completely unexpected and wonderfully silly happens, that the whole group breaks into laughter, and a shared memory is created that lasts long after the session ends.

I love it when a player

Allows their character to be unique in ways that enhances the narrative. when the dice cause mayhem and things don't go to plan. Come up with an fun and unusual way to solve the present "trouble" you're found yourselves in.
