About Japes

Hey there, great to see you here. I’ve been known as Japes (jay-ps) since my 20s. The escapism of role-playing games is something I’ve loved since that first game of D&D as a child. Since then the number and types of games has grown and they have taught me one key thing: these games are at their best when everyone is having fun and sharing the experience it brings. That first game was with friends around our dinner table. That is where the ten-year-old me first tried being the Dungeon Master, and lets just say, I’ve learned a lot since then. Tried other systems over the years and really enjoyed Shadowrun and the film tie in Men in Black. More recently I started running games online, and quickly that first game became many and several of those players are still in my games today. Don't get me wrong I still enjoy a face to face game around the table, but online brings so many interesting people to the table. Every game here is a safe, creative place to be yourself, to try out that character and that's regardless of it being a unique. Whether you'll be a 1920s Call of Cthulhu black female FBI agent, something made of sapient pearwood in the quirky Discworld, or a Fairy Barbarian who flies over the heads of the wizard to growl at the enemy in Daggerheart. These are what we’re all here to be for a while. And I for one would love to see you let those creative idea’s bubble to the surface.

My favorite books are

- The Wasp Factory, which has a macabre storyline - Mort, set in the Discworld and features Binky, who's Deaths' horse. - The Hobbit and honestly if you're into fantasy games and not read it, its well worth your time. - The whole series of Dune, which is a very gritty read.

My favorite system of all Time is

Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Adventures in Ankh- Morpork.* This is due to the laugh’s everyone has around the table. * This may well change again.

How Japes runs games

Where’s the fun in you getting the win served on a silver plater. We thrive on challenges and your choices matters as you move through the adventure and triumphed together. This means you’ve earned that victory and its all the sweeter. I love hearing the table erupt in laughter or cheers during those key moments and you’d better believe I’ll be laughing and cheering along with you. Those critical fumbles at what can feel like the worst possible timing can be hilarious. Perfect ideas that save the day will have everyone cheering when you pull them off. If you’re new to roleplaying games, you’ll find a warm welcome. I’ve been told and I feel the reviews back this up, that I’m patient, happy to explain how to play as we go, and this aids you to pick up the game mechanics. If you’re looking for immersive stories, meaningful choices, great role play and a table that celebrates both chaos and triumph, you’re in the right place.

Rules are...

Rules are the framework for the adventure. Which allow you to try things you might never do in real life. I run 'Rules As Intended' with a helping of 'Rule of Cool' for this very reason. There is a breaking point and that's when its not fun for all.

Japes's ideal table

Running games with players from different countries and play styles is great fun. What matters most is that everyone feels welcome, has a good time, and maybe becomes friends along the way. I'll encourage you to lean into your character’s strengths and flaws. this is your chance to express creativity through roleplay. It’s great to see you add personality to your actions, even in combat; those touches make the character truly yours. These moments matter just as much as the rules. It’s like those unexpected, hilarious moments where the whole group bursts into laughter. Those shared memories are the ones that last long after the session ends.

I love it when a player

Allows their character to be unique in ways that enhances the narrative. when the dice cause mayhem and things don't go to plan. Come up with an fun and unusual way to solve the present "trouble" you're found yourselves in.
