About Harry

Hi, I'm Harry! I'm 23 and I've been running tabletop rpgs for 8-11 years, depending on what you count as a "real" campaign. Tabletop RPGs are my favorite form of media, and a major part of my life. I'm endlessly enchanted by the narratives and experiences they enable, which are possible in almost no other medium (movies, video games, etc.). I usually like a balance between combat (if the system emphasizes combat) and narrative elements, and I tend to be pretty loyal to the rules, but I certainly prioritize my group's experiences and preferences above all. I especially enjoy science fiction and horror games, though I have nothing against fantasy; and I prefer more serious tones (while leaving room for some shenanigans). I love roleplay, arcing narratives, and enjoy incorporating player ideas into my games. I take this stuff pretty seriously, and it's my goal to make sure my players have a fun, memorable experience at my table!

I became a GM because

My dad gave me his old Red Box basic set when I was in grade 4, and I thought it would be fun to make dungeons and "be" all the cool monsters. I don't count those years on my experience tally, but I just never stopped loving the feeling of telling stories with my friends and showing them new worlds.

My favorite books are

My absolute favourite book is William Gibson's 'Neuromancer', which I've read many times and fallen completely in love with. As for fantasy, Joe Abercrombie (especially his recent book, 'The Devils') strikes a wonderful blend of grit and levity. The Expanse books are peak, read Leviathan Wakes!

When I'm not running games I'm...

Painting miniatures (BattleTech mostly), hiking to look for cool rocks, hitting local punk shows, or drinking waaaay too much hot chocolate or coffee (usually while settled down with a book or favourite show).

How Harry runs games

I usually take my games fairly seriously, tone-wise, and I like to have a balance between combat (assuming that we're playing a system that focuses combat!) and roleplay. I'm a bit of a stickler for rules (hopefully not at the cost of anyone's enjoyment!), and believe firmly that rules are written by designers with intent, to support the kind of experience that their game is meant to achieve. A lot of my games have themes of getting caught up in big events and unravelling secret plans, and I love trying voicework with my NPCs. Player interaction is a huge part of my games, and I love incorporating your ideas into the story we make together!

Harry's ideal table

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

strange mysteries with a conspiratorial edge like in the X-Files, heavy character moments like in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the freedom to give weird solutions a fair try balanced by the presence of real consequences, and trying out ttrpgs outside of D&D

I think min/maxing...

is kind of an inevitable result of games having mechanics that allow for character customization, even if that game doesn't have super math/number-based mechanics. Nothing wrong with making a character who's good at something as long as that character is still a person, and someone you enjoy playing

My table is not the place for...

Dildo Swaggins, the halfling bard who was raised by a travelling herd of clowns. I'm all for some levity and shenanigans are kind of inevitable at a tabletop setting, but I think what actually makes shenanigans and funny moments memorable is when they're spread out and natural
