About Joorrekiin

Hi folks, I'm Dwayne, aka Joorrekiin: a game master, editor, and educator who loves RPGs for both their collaborative elements and the ability of mechanics and random chance to inspire a world of imagination. People who play in games with me say my style is immersive, engaging, and centers the player experience. I'm skilled at running Shadowdark and D&D 5e and 5.5. ABOUT ME: As a Gen Xer, I was there for the Satanic Panic and can appreciate the nostalgia of Stranger Things. After stepping away from RPGs for a time, I returned to the hobby in 2019 - just in time for the pandemic boom in online play. My skills were shaped by hundreds of hours in VTTs and Discord. That's where several of my close adult friendships were forged. I use technology to enhance gameplay while also ensuring everyone feels welcome and engaged. Step into a world of adventure with me and let's make some memories!

I got started GMing...

while diving back into the hobby after decades away, coming at it with a ton more life experience. I first played in the 80s (middle school) and have been a GM since 2020. Mentoring young players into GMs was one of the most satisfying things about starting a school RPG club.

People are always surprised when I tell them

I taught German as a second language to U.S. middle school and high school students for 15 years, and even helped develop a textbook series for learners of German. Of course, many native German speakers would happily speak English rather than watch others struggle with their language...

When I'm not running games I'm...

doing some other freelance work according to my interests and capabilities: copy editing, proofreading, tutoring, or working on resources for teachers. I also listen to audiobooks (aiming for 50 books a year) and enjoy travel vlogs.

How Joorrekiin runs games

My approach to game mastering emphasizes fairness and flexibility. I understand the spirit of the rules and prioritize narrative and player enjoyment, while ensuring actions have consequences. Players are rewarded for in-game preparations and strategic choices. I foster a trusting environment through open communication and a collaborative mindset, adapting rules and mechanics to suit the group's preferences.

Rules are...

tools! The difference between playing a game and writing a stream-of-consciousness poem. Too many rules crush the flexibility of a collaborative storytelling effort, grinding it down to predictive programming. Too few rules can call the sense of equity, impartiality, or fairness into question.

Joorrekiin's ideal table

Any online table draws a diverse group of personalities: those that stay recognize that goodwill among players is the reason these games persist, in spite of the buffet of isolating activities our glowing rectangles tease us with at every hour of every day. Within a single session, I strive to create memorable and enjoyable experiences where we collectively weave a compelling tale. In a campaign, believe in a shared narrative, where we work together to find the fun, and make it 'our game'.

I love it when a player

brings another player's character into their clever idea. It shows an understanding of the fact that there is no main character in a party, and that the magic of the game is not contained within the borders of the character sheet.

I think metagaming...

is part of the game—and skillful players can discern PC knowledge from their own. RPGS are a layered experience: we recognize 1) the PCs as characters, 2) the players controlling the PCs, and 3)the players as individuals with real feelings. It's important to signal when talk is "above the table."
