About Raine

I’m a writer, reader, and make-believer. I’ve been playing 5e for about 5 years and DMing for about 4 years. I love a game that balances RP, combat, and exploration, and I LOVE lore. The more lore the better. I usually play paladins or wizards as a player, but love my DMPCs to be bards and sorcerers. 🤷🏻 At my table, all are welcome. I love to see a table made up of people from all walks of life. I run a game inclusive for all races, genders, orientations, and identities. I love when people bring their own experiences and interests to the table, and seeing how that effects the world we are playing in is one of my favorite things. My table is based on trust, mutual respect, and a passion for communal storytelling. We each take turns contributing to the epic tale we are telling. What will you write?

I became a GM because

I love world building, lore, and telling collaborative stories. My favorite thing about being a GM is seeing players react to a piece of lore or the environment as if it is real history or a real place. The real, invested reaction of my players is what keeps me going as a DM

My favorite shows/movies are

Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, The Graduate, Breath of the Wild (I know not a movie, but SO cinematic), Spirited Away, The Wind Rises, Demon Slayer, Mad Men, Foundation, etc, etc.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Reading, writing, or working on my bookstore Sons and Daughters Books!

How Raine runs games

I love a lore-rich world and a balanced gameplay style. I love creative choices in both RP and combat. I want players to feel connected to their character, the world, and each other, and will use every trick in the DMG (and more) to make it happen. My main goal is player immersion, so I'll set the scene as well as I can, do character voices, steep things in lore, etc. I also play music for mood and use battle maps for combat. Narrative is important to me and I love to use world building and lore to drive narrative choices and character development. You can expect character spotlights, deep lore dives, expansive and creative environments, and much more. Combat is where we get a bit more crunchy. With roleplay and stuff out of combat, I am a RoC DM, but within combat I lean a little closer to RaW. Mostly for consistency reason, but I do think it helps people orient themselves and allow for a smoother overall combat experience. But, even then, the rules can be bent a bit for something cool to happen!

Rules are...

the foundation of the game and essential for all of us to be on the same page. But that doesn't mean they can't be bent or broken to allow for something cool to happen!

When it comes to voices

The more, the better. Just don't expect professional level acting🥲 My accents and voice slip sometimes, but damn if I don't do my best to commit to the bit

Raine's ideal table

My table feels best when we are all trying to tell a compelling story together. I don't mind if you mess up some rules or have questions, of course, as long as you are engaged and respectful of the other players, the world, and the game itself. My sessions tend to hit both sides of the comedy/drama spectrum and I love that. If I can get the feeling of both a play and an improv session in one game while everyone is having fun telling a story together, that's the dream.

I love it when a player

Respects and engages in mechanics and roleplay with the same enthusiasm. I know that can be pretty rare, but that's why it's so exciting when I see it!

I think metagaming...

is the greatest sin. Of course, know your features and spells, but your decision making should come from your character's brain in the scene, not yours, especially if you're trying to optimize the outcome of something.
