About Darth

Hi. I'm Jon, aka Darth. I have been a DM for almost 10 years. I work from home and love DMing both Pathfinder 2e and D&D 5e; I'm also proficient with Monster of the Week and I am learning Daggerheart. In 2017, I decided to pick up a hobby I hadn't done since high school (I'm old, so that was a long time ago). I joined a random game and was taught Pathfinder 1e. After a month of deep-diving into the rules and roleplay, I decided to try my hand at DMing. After the 'one-shot' I intended as a test, my group has been going for close to 10 years and has spawned two others. We’ve changed systems and players, and even rebooted. I’ve made plenty of mistakes and will continue to make them, but I always learn from them. I have a homebrew world 15 years in the making with four campaigns under its belt. I am always refining my skills and my story. If you’re curious, the order of play is based on where the campaign sits on the timeline—my Cascoria game is the fourth story. The order is Campaign 4, 2, 3, and ending on Campaign 1. It's a little Star Wars-y, but that order is best for the universe-level twists. I am also an amateur voice actor, mostly working with the Marvel Audio Drama Universe (MADU) by Audio Anomaly. Some of my more notable parts have been Eddie Brock, Reed Richards, Randy (created for Jessica Jones), and Alabama from Ve'Nam. Give us a listen on YouTube! Those folks are some of the most talented writers, producers, editors, and actors I've ever seen. I can't speak highly enough of the passion within Audio Anomaly. Leave a comment saying I sent you—something like 'Eddie Brock/Reed thought I would like this!' The director will get a kick out of it.

I got started GMing...

By accident! I stepped up to run a 'simple one-shot' for some folks on Roll20 back in 2016. They liked it so much they essentially bullied me into starting a full campaign. Ten years later, I'm still running games for some of those same people. It’s the only kind of bullying I’ve ever allowed ^_^

How Darth runs games

I am a storyteller and a roleplayer. My games are heavy on narrative; I want your character to influence my world. The story will happen, but you get to shape it. Combat is a secondary concern, and almost all of my encounters have a way out of them. I do not overly concern myself with rules. I will break them for something cool. The story always comes first. I make high-quality maps and memorable NPCs that might just make you cry.

I prep by

going over notes, recordings, maps, and outlines. There is a ton I improvise every session, but I always know where things are going. I like to give you the road to get there - you figure out how to drive on it.

Rules are...

flexible. I make calls on the fly to make the scene better. If rules are murky, we get 60 seconds to look it up before I make a final call.

When it comes to voices

I go all in! Some of my voices are the same. As a male, I have a limited range of female voices, but I will always make a distinction for who is whom. I'm an amateur voice actor - I got this! o7

Darth's ideal table

Collaborative, patient, mindful, and kind players are my ideal. Those who allow beginners to make mistakes are some of my favorites. Watching someone less experienced have that 'lightbulb moment' is absolute gold. There are plenty of moments where humor is needed, and I spend a good amount of time making you laugh, but when players know intuitively when 'jokes have left the room,' it creates a perfect sweet spot for the table.

I think it's a red flag when players...

start to use the 'it's what my character would do' a little too often. Edgy characters are cool, but not being able to work together because your character is a jerk is not. Be nice, be cool, and don't hide behind a character sheet

I think min/maxing...

is not for my table. I am beginner-friendly, and mistakes are a good thing. I don't want a completely optimized demigod; I want a flawed character who took a spell or a feat just for fun.
