About Max Bloomfield

Hi! My name is Max. Outside of TTRPGs, I enjoy Magic: The Gathering, cooking, reading, exploring, and spending time with my fiance. I've been playing TTRPGs for over a decade and been GMing for about 7 years. I have mostly played and run D&D 5e, but I do have experience with a variety of other systems and will run them if that is the best system for the experience the table is looking for. I am an organizational psychologist by trade, so you can expect a sprinkle of that throughout. I have experience with adventures ranging from short stories to epic sagas, and players ranging from complete beginners to multi-decade veterans. I also have experience creating a welcoming environment for players of all genders, races, sexualities, and neurotypes. A comprehensive session 0 complete with safety tools is a must; players feeling psychologically safe to play in the space and take risks is a essential to a good game. I believe that TTRPGs are about chasing experiences, and I look forward to hearing what you are looking to get out of the game. I have run games in a variety of settings, but my favorite is Ater- a homebrew setting that I have been developing for over 5 years.

How Max Bloomfield runs games

For the most part, my GMing style morphs to fit the needs of the group. A session 0 lets me know what kind of adventure the players are looking to have. I have run games with tones that range from extremely goofy to extremely grim, including multiple tones within the same adventure. Its all about what the players want. That extends to the balance between roleplay, combat and exploration. Whether you want to navigate the imperial court, go looking for the secrets of the old world in overgrown ruins, hunt dangerous monsters, wage guerilla warfare or all of the above, I've got you covered. Despite my range, there are a few things that stay the same when I'm behind the screen: - The rules are there as a very important guideline. One must know the rules in order to break them correctly. - Your characters will be forced to make difficult decisions and do dangerous things. - I roll with the punches and am willing to play in the space with you. - When there is a lot of different things going on with character backstories, I am great at weaving it all together into a cohesive narrative. - Vivid descriptions, plenty of lore to chew on, and a collaborative mindset toward storytelling.

My table is a place where the more someone communicates about what they want out of the game, the better of a time they will have. I like to establish expectations in advance, and I thrive at meeting them. Players who understand why they play will fit best at my table. As for player traits; bravery, cleverness, and decisiveness will serve you well. A willingness to play without reservation is ideal, but not strictly necessary. The general vibe will change by the group, but I tend to favor grounded approaches to silly concepts or silly approaches to grounded concepts. I like constrast.
