About Rei
Hi, I'm Rei! I've been running roleplaying games for about 15 years now. I got my start with Dungeons & Dragons and from there have gotten into all types of tabletop rpgs, with my current favorites being narrative forward, RP-heavy games, and fast and creative rules-medium to rules-lighter games. I enjoy teaching and helping new players and telling immersive stories that give players room to be creative and shape the game world. I run a safe, inclusive table open to LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and neurodivergent folks. Chaotic good vibes only!

I got started GMing...
By talking my weekly board gaming group into trying D&D 4e. Since I was the person who usually read the rules of new games and summarized them for the rest of the group, I was made DM by default. The first time I ever played D&D was from behind the DM screen. A nerve-wracking, but fun experience!
My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be
This is a hard one, but I think I would bring rules for Forged in the Dark, FATE, and Mist Engine. Setting agnostic, fiction first games for telling any kind of story in endless configurations. I might not need a rescue boat...
My favorite books are
There are so many books I love, but some of my most re-read books are The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir, Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, and the Realm of the Elderlings books by Robin Hobb.
How Rei runs games
I love creative roleplay and storytelling and I favor systems that are narrative first and that encourage fast resolution, rules over rulings, and room for players to add their own flavor and impact to the world. My style leans toward sandbox play and interesting scenarios to explore over linear narratives. I'm a big fan of my player characters and I enjoy creating opportunities for them to develop along interesting character arcs. I'm always open to working with my players as a group to customize elements of the game world to fit their characters concepts or preferred style of play.

I once ran a session...
For a single player at a bar, completely off the cuff. They had always wanted to try playing D&D, but didn't know where to start. I helped them make a quick character on their phone, download a dice roller and off we went. We played a theater of the mind scenario over a couple beers and had a blast.
My favorite trope is...
The band of misfits that become a found family.
Rules are...
Part of the bedrock that underpins table trust. Rules can be followed cleanly, or bent when it makes sense to do so, as long as it's done in good faith and aligns with the table agreement and group priorities.
Rei's ideal table
My tables are built on inclusion and collaboration! I run games that are friendly and welcoming to LGBTQ+, POC, and neuro-divergent folk. If you like narrative-first games where the players have agency in shaping the world, complex topics are intentionally examined, and choices matter, you'll fit right in.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table
Emotionally-centered stories and collaborative world-building.
I love it when a player
Takes a chance with their character. Whether it's making a suboptimal play to stay true to their drives, leaning into a mistake, challenging their beliefs, or risking emotional vulnerability by opening up, changing their mind, or admitting fear or failure.
I think it's a red flag when players...
Don't engage with the world as if it has consequence, quarterback other players, or take up more of the table's energy than they generate.
