About DMStevo
I have been playing RPG’s most of my life. I received the D&D basic box set for my birthday when I was 12 and have been hooked ever since. I’ve played and ran D&D, Call of Cthulhu, Traveller, Path and Starfinder, Gamma World and more! I have a huge collection of books on my shelf and online. I can run games on Roll20, Foundry and Fantasy Grounds. I am not a strict rule follower. I believe in the rule of cool. I want my players to have a great time because if they’re having fun it means that I will be having fun. I love collaborative gameplay and story telling. I think one of my “faults” is that I can be a little too nice or a push over for my players. I've had players behave badly and it took me a little more time than I would’ve liked before I talked to them to rectify the problems. But I’m working on that. I plan on running a lot more games in the near future as I slowly wind down my real life business. So the future looks bright!! But I would love for StartPlaying to be my new home for finding fun and exciting players.

I became a GM because
I am in my happy place. Creating worlds for my players to explore and for all of us to create a shared story is amazing. I love to come up with voices, descriptions and backstories to flesh out and make our stories come to life. To me it is therapeutic!
My favorite books are
Anything that is fantasy, sci-fi or epic. Brandon Sanderson is probably my favorite writer right now. But Robert Jordan is up there also (especially his Conan books). The Dresden Files are super tasty and right now I have been getting into RPG-Lit books. Like Dungeon Crawler Carl.
The three words my players would use to describe me are...
Funny, kind and kind of funny.
How DMStevo runs games
I want for my games to have good amount of roll play and for us to create an amazing, collaborative story together. Combat is definitely a part of it but probably not in every session. Story and character arcs are more important in my games than hack and slash. I enjoy prepping my games with the intent to flesh out my player's character backstories. Nothing gets my blood pumping more than creating a twist to connect the characters to the story and the world that we are building together. I try to make my NPC's unique and different and I try my best to make combat enjoyable and not a slog of just reducing hit point until the big bad is dead. Though I can't hit the mark every time I do try to make every turn, every twist and every choice my players make to mean something in this make believe world that we are building together.

I deal with rules issues by...
I usually go with the "Rule of Cool" rule. Where as I will just let my players do what it is that they want to do and maybe come back to the rule later. I would rather the game keep moving then to spend time looking up rules unless it is a game breaking thing or super important.
My favorite trope is...
The horny bard is always a pretty good trope. I don't really know. I think tropes are tropes for a reason. They usually work and in the hands of a skilled player/GM they usually work well!
When it comes to voices
I try my best to make NPC's unique. Yes I sometimes take ideas from the best (Matt Mercer or Brennan Lee Mulligan). I am the worst at trying to do a Scottish accent but dangit I try....and I will fail.
DMStevo's ideal table
I like to have a well rounded table. I want everyone to feel safe enough to explore their characters fully and comfortable enough with everyone to be silly, be creative and to just have fun. But not at any other players expense (bullying is not tolerated). I love to use pretty maps and animated token stuff. It just looks cool. I really do not like antagonistic characters or players that have characters working on goals that go against the other players at the table. Unless it is thought out and talked about before hand. I don't enjoy evil characters unless all of the characters are evil and we are playing an evil campaign. Most of all I look at it like this: We are all trying to create an amazing, badass story that we are all included in. So we are basically a team. I want teamwork from my players. Everyone will get their time in the sun (or moon for you Drows out there) so it is important for the team to let others shine when its not their turn in the sun. Be stoked for others when something cool happens for them. And in return they too will be stoked for you hopefully. We all live and die by this amazing story we tell to each other so let's make in incredible!

I love it when a player
Gets excited for another player's success. When someone rolls a nat 20 and everyone at the table cheers the other player on. Or when players communicate with each other as their characters and converse within game without me prompting them to do so.
I think metagaming...
Is kinda aweful. There are so many published adventures out there that I enjoy running so when a player has already played that adventure or has read it and their character is making choices based only on the fact that they know what is going to happen it kind of ruins the vibe.
I think min/maxing...
Go ahead and max out that toon because I WILL find a way to challenge your character. I accept the challenge 😊
