About Josh Buchanan

Salve! My name is Josh (Chef/He/Him). I was first introduced to TTRPGs around the age of ten when I discovered a dusty old board game at my grandparents' house called HERO QUEST! This game was pure magic for the soul and the catalyst for a condition called PDMS, or Perpetual Dungeon Master Syndrome. Alongside a worn out copy of Bridge to Terabithia and a fresh copy of The Hobbit, the Hero Quest board game was one of my most valued possessions. After a mega long stint playing Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game and getting into the RPG element of the game (when that finally happened), I decided to pick up D&D 5e and never looked back.

When I'm not running games I'm prepping games, cooking, or maybe just enjoying life. Heeeey!

How Josh Buchanan runs games

I rely on improvisation, adapting the story based on my players' choices during the campaign. I encourage my players to develop their characters and personal stories through engaging with the world presented to them, and leaving their own marks on it. I employ the Rules as Written as a foundation for game play, using variant rules to place emphasis on a gritty survivalist theme. However, if a situation would benefit from less game mechanics and more cinematics then I often opt for the Rule of Cool in short theatre of the mind scenes. My engagement style is watchful, allowing my players to explore and roleplay without imposed exposition. I will shine the spotlight on my more reticent players if I feel they're getting neglected by the narrative. I endeavour to operate openly and honestly with my players and expect the same in return. I personally approach every game with a sense of solidarity, that we're here (DM and players) to create the thing together. All rolls are made openly and DM tampering is restricted, and only made to the benefit of the collective narrative and the session pacing.

Josh Buchanan's ideal table

My ideal table is friendly, respectful, and collaborative. I love players who are excited to engage with the story, support each other’s spotlight moments, and communicate openly. New and experienced players alike are welcome—questions and creativity are encouraged. We’re here to tell a great story together, have fun, and make sure everyone leaves the table feeling included. I run structured, character-driven games for players who value collaboration, preparation, and immersive storytelling. My games emphasize party cohesion and shared narrative. Players are encouraged to develop characters with clear motivations, personal arcs, and meaningful connections to the world and each other. Whether your focus is roleplay, tactics, or a balance of both, teamwork and respect for the group experience come first. While perfection isn’t expected, decorum at the table is: arriving on time, staying engaged, knowing your character’s abilities, and being ready when your turn comes—particularly at higher levels. In-character conflict is welcome when it serves the story; out-of-character tension is not. I maintain a respectful, inclusive table where player comfort and collaboration are priorities.
