About Mothmanners (Jill)

I've been a player of D&D for about ten years at this point, and I've been DMing for seven of those years. It was one of the biggest things to help me gain confidence in my creative abilities and endeavours, but also helped through some of my toughest times. I was introduced first through the podcast The Adventure Zone and fell in love with the concept/idea. So much so I created animatics during my time in school for the D&D podcast (all of which landed my jobs in the animation industry). I've quite a few games under my belt - three being homebrew campaigns, two being Curse of Strahd, and many mini one shots. I adore creating an environment to tell stories in. Roleplaying is always my favourite when it comes to D&D, especially encouraging newcomers to join in when they're unsure. I also run a mean, dynamic combat. I love playing with environmental effects and landscapes. On top of utilizing tons of online supplements and maps, I also build a bunch of my own. I also create tons of art for my NPCs and stories when I have the time! D&D is a passion of mine that I love to bring to other people to share in, and it's my hope to use my chops and love of the game to bring more into this incredible hobby.

My favorite shows/movies are

Some of my all time favourite films are: Jim Henson's Labyrinth Tokyo Godfathers Porco Rosso METROPOLIS (Tezuka anime ver) Shrek 2 Poltergeist(1982) Grave Encounters Lord of the Rings (extended trilogy obv) Jaws SINNERS Godzilla Minus One Shin Godzilla KPOP Demon Hunters I could go on --

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

I've polled my players and the answers could all be summed up like this: Inclusive, Immersive, Ceative, and caring. I know that's four but my players almost made me cry with their kind words and thoughts. Also ruuuuule of cool.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Creating Art, Gaming, or Watching Movies. I'm an animator professional by day, and total nerd by night. I love media that tells stories and I think that has translated perfectly into my love of D&D and DMing.

How Mothmanners (Jill) runs games

I've quite a few games under my belt - three being homebrew campaigns, two being Curse of Strahd, and many mini one shots. I adore creating an environment to tell stories in. Roleplaying is always my favourite when it comes to D&D, especially encouraging newcomers to join in when they're unsure. I also run a mean, dynamic combat. I love playing with environmental effects and landscapes. On top of utilizing tons of online supplements and maps, I also build a bunch of my own. I also create tons of art for my NPCs and stories when I have the time! I always want my players to feel part of the story and the center of it (rather than just coincidentally there) - so I often make sure to learn about their characters and help weave their stories into the campaign as a whole. We cannot forget, of course, that I am a theater kid and I love to laugh. So even in the grimmest of settings, I always delight in goofing every now and then. Lace the joy with bittersweet to create the best D&D table dynamics. D&D is a passion of mine that I love to bring to other people to share in, and it's my hope to use my chops and love of the game to bring more into this incredible hobby.

I once ran a session...

Timed. It was a four hour adventure from start to finish and every hour the game would progress / the new section would open up. It was a railroaded game because it literally took place on a train.

My games focus on...

Story and Characters. I love running games where I weave my players into the game after learning about them / collaborating together on aspects. There will also always been something a little spooky and something super goofy in any game. The two sides of my vibe coin tm.

When it comes to voices

I will always, always, do a silly voice. Or an accented voice. Or any voice mod. I just love using my theater kid chops when DMing.

Mothmanners (Jill)'s ideal table

My table is an inclusive and welcoming space for all. LGBTQIA+, Newcomers, Old Timers -- anyone willing to have fun in a new space and make new friends. My table will always have a session zero, consent/trigger forms, and check ins/open communication. This is a place for us to all have fun, and if one person isn't having fun then we all aren't. While I do play pretty closely to the book and rules, I am always open to customization / flavouring a character, spells, etc. The best types of rules are the ones you can break or reskin once you know them. I will always be up front about what's alright at my tables and what isn't, what my home rules will be / rule of cool parameters, and overall expectations!
