About Nick
I've played TTRPGs since 1991. I have been a player and a Game Master (DM, Handler, Narrator, etc) . While my playing has been on and off for years I have really been GMing and playing again since 2020. As a GM I feel I'm best suited to help new players getting into the hobby. I like to create an atmosphere of cooperation, communication, and celebration. My biggest honor has been when players of mine have come back to tell me they "learned everything they know" about the game from me yet have sought out their own "other games" and/or become GMs themselves. Really is more rewarding. With a background in Outdoor Adventure Recreation Leadership I feel I have a unique skillset to break game rules and technology down to their basic forms. Building a solid foundation for play and then encouraging players to "make it their own".

I got started GMing...
To enjoy this hobby, provide it for my friends, and escape the everyday!
My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be
IN ORDER!!! D20 system (DnD & Shadowdark), Delta Green, and I struggle between Pendragon, Marvel Mutliverse RRP, Star Wars RPG, and Dune Adventures in the Imperium. ALL have so much potential!!
When I'm not running games I'm...
Skiing, fishing, tying flies for fly fishing, hunting, riding ATVs, biking, camping, SCUBA diving, reading, old school video games, board games, table top games, enjoying bourbon and cigars from time to time, firing up the smoker, watching the Red Wings..... I joke that my hobby is hobbies.
How Nick runs games
Being a good GM is all about facilitating a shared, enjoyable storytelling experience for everyone at the table. I believe in the "WE" of gaming. WE do it through a blend of positive communication, preparation, adaptability, and a focus on inclusive player engagement. It should be fun for all! I would encourage us all to be fans of the characters; players as collaborators in this shared story, not opponents. WE provide opportunities for players to make characters look awesome; achieve their goals. Our "session zero" would have an outline where we establish ground rules early on to manage expectations and ensure mutual respect among all participants. Our CODE!! It is my part of this CODE to always be fair while encouraging a "yes, and" atmosphere amongst all. There needs to be a world of interesting situations, locations, and non-player characters. Then you, the player, decide how to interact with this shared world. Improvisation. Dice rolls will help tell this story. The story unfolds at the table, not beforehand. I foster a “WE know the core mechanics”. Know your part as best you can. I do the same. Then WE work together to make it consistent. This is more important than being 100% correct all of the time. Yet I will need and expect feedback. WE will always be learning together refining these skills discovering new parts of these games which truly excite us. Let’s make memorable stories together! TABLE CULTURE - Play your character, let others play theirs. - Help and encouragement for all players; new and veteran alike. - Zero-tolerance policy toward harassment or bullying of any kind. - Attitude is greater than experience. TECH + RESOURCES - I encourage all to PURCHASE the systems we play with. - I like to use simple platforms for our tech needs (Roll20 , Google Meet, Owlbear Rodeo). GM STYLE - I want to have fun WITH all at the table. - Character death is to be embraced not something to avoid at all costs and become upset over. - Your choices need to matter; the story is enhanced by players' actions. - Everyone has a chance to shine. --- MORE SEASONED GMs have said these are common questions about the table vibe --- Q - I am a new player and not very familiar with this setting, is it ok to join? A - YES! I get the most satisfaction in helping people get into this hobby. Q - What occurs more, roleplay or combat? A - This is very dependent on the system and the players. Q - Can I play an evil/selfish/lone-wolf character? A - Most tables struggle with this. With that said, it can be done well IF you come at it with cooperation in mind. Think Raistlin in Dragonlance (Look it up!!) Q - I want to Min-Max my character. Can I? A - Sure, yet that usually isn't the most interesting way to play. Q - Safety Tools? A - Yes. Q - What do you as a GM due with players who create problems and conflict with other players? A - Some tables aren't for everybody, and that's ok. We take steps to sort that out ahead of time!

I once ran a session...
on a live-aboard SCUBA diving boat trip in the Galapagos.
My games focus on...
The story we make together!
When it comes to voices
I might not be the best, but I try to make them memorable!!
Nick's ideal table
Engaged players all willing to support others choices. Giving guidance (not the spell) yet allowing others to "play their game". A prepared group who knows as much as they can about the game mechanics. No one is the master of the game, but as a group we will be. Fun, fellowship, and enthusiasm to come to the table each and every time!!

I am for a vibe that's...
"Alright, let's do this!!"
I love it when a player
embodies "yes, and....." using the system and rules to lift up other players play!
I think min/maxing...
does not take the developing story into account. Players who min-max typically have it all planned out before the first in session die rolls. Letting the story and die rolls define the character is much more interesting for all.
