About Dane Farley

I've been playing Dungeons and Dragons for over 20 years and have been DMing regularly for 13. I've had experience running pre made modules and playing in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, but have spent the majority of my time building a homebrew world. I've had experience as both a DM and a player on live streamed games with Tales From Rukon. I'm very open to different styles of play, and have made my world open to a huge variety of settings and themes, and I have fun tailoring the game to whoever my players are!

How Dane Farley runs games

I'm very versatile and flexible! I love a good epic combat with shining hero moments, I love character building roleplay, I love down-to-earth political moments, and I love silly comedic game approaches. An average game of mine will tend to have moments of roleplay, mystery solving, and combat, but I'll shift game-to-game and group-to-group to fit whatever play style the players prefer, and I find the process of writing something with a style goal in mind to be fun.

My games focus on...

Character building, world building, and party. Whether it's a large scale epic or a grounded, gritty adventure, there is always a focus on character interactions and their place in the world.

Rules are...

a guideline, but not a box. I generally follow things from the book that make sense, but at the end of the day, we're having fun with a roleplaying game, and the most important rule is the Rule of Cool. Anything that is in support of better character moments is something I'm a fan of.

When it comes to voices

I love a fun character or NPC voice! As long as it's not being derived from a negative or offensive trope, I think voices can help players connect to characters and increase immersion. If it's something a player wants to do, they should!

Dane Farley's ideal table

My table is a good blend of serious and funny. I tend to run thematically serious games that are open to fun interpretations from players, and a group that is there to sink their teeth into the emotional moments of a story, while also wanting to crack jokes and have a good time. I want both the in-game and above-game moments to be fun and memorable, and serve as a vehicle for creative expression.

the rule of cool

I love it when a player

initiates inter-party roleplay and makes an effort to have an interesting inter-party dynamic.

I think min/maxing...

can be super fun. I enjoy having chances to both play to characters' strengths and exploit weaknesses. Also, having clear strengths and weaknesses can inform some great roleplay!
