About Eric the Ready
Ever since I took a course in University on Medievalism in Games and Dungeons & Dragons was one of the course topics, I had an interest to play, but never found my passion for it after I finally decided to give it a go after graduating. What led me to this decision was inspiration (bardic and heroic) from Viva La Dirt League's (VLDL) D&D Campaign, a channel of content creators from New Zealand that I had been following for a while for their other skits, such as Video Game Logic. I started GMing 5e (2014), but switched to primarily the 2024 ruleset, although I prefer a combination of each, and I am more than flexible enough to accommodate either system in (my) games. I have been GMing since late 2023, enjoying the challenge of getting better with each session. Some of my favourite pastimes within D&D is homebrewing monsters, encounters, spells, magic items, and more to bring the lore of (my) worlds to the 5e system, taking inspiration from other great GMs out there. Admittingly, I have only really played D&D as a TTRPG system, although I have played modified or custom systems for shorter campaigns, adventures, or one-shots. I use D&D Beyond and Discord to run online games, and prefer those platforms due to my familiarity with them. I look forward to sharing in more adventures there (and in person).

I became a GM because
I wanted to tell stories and build worlds.
The three words my players would use to describe me are...
Kind, Understanding, Funny
When I'm not running games I'm...
creating content for games and more...as well as playing games. I also love the outdoors, and enjoy camping, hiking, and occasionally travelling for inspiration.
How Eric the Ready runs games
Mix of role-play, combat, and exploration. A combination of official rules, homebrew, and custom mechanics to mix things up. I enjoy the occasional random encounter, but ultimately enjoy the direction narratives go based on player actions (within reason).

I once ran a session...
where players had to create a Play to break a hag's curse on a Valkyrie. It was amazing. I'd watch it. The hag's words: “The only way to break this curse is if you speak again.” The players found clever ways to have the Valkyrie speak via her pet Raven's mimicry, having her write scenes, and more!
I prep by
probably prepping too much. But it's fine. I'm fine! I enjoy prepping.
My games focus on...
Exploration, Roleplaying, and Combat. And Shenanigans. Can't forget the shenanigans.
Eric the Ready's ideal table
My table style has party/player banter, serious moments, shenanigans, and overall fun play and emergent storytelling. Each player character... - Has a significant narrative moment, and many minor moments - Contributes to the overall campaign plot - Faces terrible monsters - Will probably laugh

I love it when a player
becomes invested in the story, contributes to the overall worldbuilding, and has fun.
I think metagaming...
is fine so long as players can separate what they know versus what their characters know, and it doesn't get in the way of playing the game.
I think min/maxing...
may not fit with all my games. But it's fine otherwise.
