About Andrew Mason

My name is Andrew and I’m a 26 year old from STL. I grew up homeschooled so growing up my siblings and I would play make believe a lot. All through high school and through most of college I was acting in lead roles (villains and protagonists) in theater. I was also in a choir through middle school and high school so I’m comfortable doing singing parts. I have my BLS in Paramedicine but decided to go back to my roots and grow plants for a living. I started playing DND when my siblings took an interest in it when I was 16. I soon fell in love with the system and TTRPG’s in general. It was a while before I actually DM’d my first campaign and it went terribly. I leveled up my players too fast and gave them way too powerful of magic items to the point where they whomped everything I put in their way or got downed in one hit. However everyone still had a fun time and I learned a lot from it. Since then I’ve ran a few flavorful one-shots including a homebrew swashbuckling encounter with crew morale having positive or negative effects. I’ve also read up on Pathfinder, Daggerheart, and the Cosmere RPG which I am so excited about. Overall I’m a relatively new DM with a willingness to work with my players and make sure everyone is having a fun time!

How Andrew Mason runs games

I love everything about TTRPG's from the roleplay to crunchy combat. What I love most is creating opportunities for my players to shine and feel a connection with the world and their characters. My games have a good foundation of prep and world building with the meat being player-world interactions and toppings of off the cuff wildness. I love role play and chill player conversations but I also love massive combat and putting players in intense situations. I’m also really big on descriptions of the scene and environment, I try my best at animal sounds (even when they come out goofy) and I do my best to have different voices for immersion. I’m not the best with accents but I’m always trying to get better. I love love love working with my players and inviting them into integrating their character into the world and party. My goal is to make every session have something good for everyone.

I once ran a session...

I ran a one shot that was Thanksgiving themed so my players escorted a gigantic demonic turkey to the next town over. It was full of chaos and unanswered questions that I didn't have to answer because it was a one shot but I had all the answers and it felt great having it all fleshed out.

Rules are...

Rules are a good guide and should mostly be followed for the consistency of the game, but rule of cool can usually get me to relax. As long as the players are being creative and respecting the game I'll bend the rules!

When it comes to voices

I love doing different voices and I have a pretty good range. Accents are hard.

Andrew Mason's ideal table

My table is a blend of fun goofiness that has to be ok and ready to get serious either in an intense combat or immersive roleplay. I tend to over prepare, but I'm still learning and there's always something that my players find that I'm not fully prepared for but I roll with it! I'm looking for players who love the game and just want to have fun. You'll kind of get what you put into the game as in if you want to flesh out your backstory and really be interested in the world. I like the vibe at my table to be a group of friends who can laugh together and tease each other but also trust that they won't be judged and that they can always speak up if there's something they don't like or disagree with.

I love it when a player

I love it when a player incorporates a flaw into a decision or adds some flavor to an action their taking based off of prior experiences in the game.

I think metagaming...

I think metagaming is fine to an extent. We're all intelligent humans that want to play the game well. However if your character is in a different location and an ally gets attacked, your character wouldn't know to go help. Other than that most meta gaming is fine with me.

I think min/maxing...

I think min/maxing is great as long as you have the roleplay to go along with it. I min/maxed a Bugbear Rune Knight in D&D5e and I mostly whomp all enemies with him, but I try really hard on the roleplay and have engaging conversations with everyone in game.
