About Darthoingoboingo

I have been playing TTRPGs for 30+ years and I have been running games for 28+ years. I started with AD&D and have branched out into World of Darkness, PBtA, and many other lesser known tabletop games. I love running and playing in games with a lot of character development and excitement. I have been or am currently involved in actual play podcasts, audiobook recording, online games, Adventure League, teaching myself audio engineering and generally being a really huge nerd about several fandoms. I grew up in New Orleans and moved to Portland, OR. I am teaching my son how to play TTRPGs and passing along the torch.

My favorite books are

Dungeon crawler Carl, the vampire Chronicles, and the Wheel of Time. I know that these are three series and not three books, but that's how I roll.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Story-focused (I'm counting that as one word!), passionate, and knowledgeable

When I'm not running games I'm...

Being dragged to multiple street festivals by my wife, working a 9-5 and being snuggled by my son and elderly orange cat.

How Darthoingoboingo runs games

I tend to run games that focus on character development, drama, tension, and overcoming obstacles. That said, I love action and adventure as well and can successfully blend the two. I believe in asking players what kind of games they want to play up front and molding the game around this. For me, it is all about the story and focusing on fun, not just for myself for my players.

I deal with rules issues by...

I make a decision at the table and between games I do research to make sure I made the right call. If I later found out I was wrong I have no problem admitting it and following the rule thereafter.

My games focus on...

Telling a story and character development in a way that feels fun and safe for everyone involved. We are working together to tell a story and good stories have conflict, tension, obstacles, and chaos

Rules are...

An important guide for how to arbitrate how to decide what happens in a game but it's not nearly as important as having fun or telling a story everyone is engaged in. The most important rule is have fun!

Darthoingoboingo's ideal table

I pride myself on running an inclusive table that is welcoming to anyone who enjoys telling a good story. The vibe at my table is relaxed, story focused and exciting.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

Supernatural/technological/political wackiness

I love it when a player

Is so into the story of the game that they start talking about it in between sessions.

My table is not the place for...

Non inclusive minded people, people who wait for the plot to "catch up with them" or people who are generally disengaged until their turn in the initiative order.
