About Sam, The Night Shift

Hi there, and well met. I’m Sam and I am running the Night Shift. My approach to running games is shaped by my background in documentary filmmaking. I put a strong focus on your characters’ experiences, build rich atmosphere, and create memorable NPCs, along with plenty of drama to give you something real to play with. If you love dark fantasy, sci fi, and horror, you will probably feel right at home. ATMOSPHERE: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ROLEPLAY: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ STORY: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ I see my role as setting the stage for you and your characters while making sure every player has the space and support to engage in a meaningful arc. I encourage active roleplay both between players and with NPCs, and I enjoy presenting morally grey characters, difficult choices, and situations that do not have easy answers. IF YOU ARE NEW to TTRPGs, no problem. I have had a lot of success helping new players get comfortable, explaining rules as they come up, and creating a safe, collaborative table. The community around my games is also very welcoming and good at including newcomers. If that sounds like your kind of game, I would be happy to welcome you to one of my one shots or campaigns. Feel free to send me a DM if you have any questions.

I got started GMing...

...because I missed playing after moving cities. Then lockdown hit, cramming me and my eleven flatmates into one house for months with not much to do. I taught them D&D and Call of Cthulhu, started running games, and haven’t stopped since.

My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be

If I’m alone, I’d bring SoloDark. If I have company, Ultraviolet Grasslands and the Black City for its open, wildly creative writing, and Tribe 8, because I love sourcebooks written from the perspectives of the people who live in the setting.

When I'm not running games I'm...

working on documentary films about people, their work and labor, go field recording, and read classic, often darker science-fiction novels. I also go on long walks with my wife and play with our cat.

How Sam, The Night Shift runs games

I run games that are/have... 🎭 Roleplay focused, character-driven 🎬 Strong atmosphere: FoundryVTT with music, ambient sound, canvas art, and field recordings 🗣️ Memorable NPCs with voices, quirks, and goals 🤝 Collaborative problem-solving in player-driven situations (I prep situations, not plots!!) -------------- My games focus on roleplay and shared storytelling. Most scenes play out in our imagination, with maps used when they help make a fight or location clearer. In FoundryVTT, I use music, ambient sound, and my own field recordings to build atmosphere. I also use animated combat enhancements, share artwork and canvas art, and provide animated backdrops by JamesRPGArt to support theater-of-the-mind play. The people you meet, whether friends, rivals, or villains, are feel like distinct characters with their own voices, quirks, and goals. Encounters are not just about rolling dice to defeat monsters. They are chances to make choices, negotiate, build relationships, and discover what kind of person your character becomes. I actively encourage player ideas and collaborative problem-solving. I do not prep plots. I prep situations. You always decide where the story goes next. If you are new to D&D or other systems I run, such as Call of Cthulhu or Delta Green, you are very welcome at my table. I enjoy teaching beginners, explain rules step by step as they come up in play, and never expect you to know everything. Bring your curiosity, and I’ll help with the rest.

If my games were Movies they'd be directed by...

Ridley Scott, David Mitchell, and Coralie Fargeat.

My games focus on...

you, the players at my table. I work closely with you to weave your backstory and character arc into a lived-in world where your PC matters. I encourage active play with NPCs and locations, with fair, meaningful challenges and difficult choices.

When it comes to voices

you will hear a lot of different ones! I love playing with tone, rhythm and accents to create NPCs that feel alive and distinc from each other.

Sam, The Night Shift's ideal table

This table is a great fit for players who enjoy character interaction, collaborative storytelling, and meaningful choices, even when things get tense. If you sit down at my table, we will care a lot about the characters. The players who tend to thrive here are curious, engaged, and interested in more than just the dice. They ask questions, poke at mysteries, and think about how their characters feel, not just what they can roll. Most of the time, we play through conversation. We speak in character, react to each other, and let scenes grow from those interactions. You do not need acting skills or funny voices, only imagination and a willingness to listen, respond, and share the spotlight. I’m happy to teach, explain rules as often as needed, and answer questions at any time, so new players are always welcome. I enjoy darker, more serious worlds, but the table itself is fun and relaxed. There is room for laughter, encouragement, and collaboration. Newcomers and veterans tend to play well together here, learning from one another and helping each other have a good time.

I love it when a player

draws another into roleplay and together they create the sense that everyone shares equally in the fantasy. As a GM, that’s when I’m most moved and proud.

I think metagaming...

can be useful when it keeps the group aligned and the game moving. I use OOC check-ins (especially in sandboxes) and safety tools. But please don’t use player-only knowledge, read stat blocks, or look up the module.

My table is not the place for...

players chasing the latest overpowered build. If your concept exists only to maximize DPR, this isn’t your table. It’s also not a good fit for lone wolves or egotism. We play as a team, with story, fairness, and fun at the center.
