About Michael

My name is Michael and I've been gaming my entire life. After years of wanting to get into Dungeons and Dragons I finally did in 2022. I've been a GM for multiple campaigns, including one that has been going for over three years. I've also been a player in a campaign at a local game store that was streamed on Twitch. I love playing different types of table top games with friends and family. All kinds of trivia, Uno, Azul, Clue, Queen by Midnight, 'Til the Last Gasp and Betrayal at House on the Hill are some of my favorites.

How Michael runs games

I love the idea that playing Dungeons and Dragons is, at its core, a group of people telling a story. I encourage my in person players to roleplay as much as they are comfortable with. When it's time to go into combat I believe that the feel of the fight should match what's going on at that moment in the game. Not every combat encounter should feel like multiple players could go down. Sometimes combat should be easy for the players. That way, when they get into a difficult fight it feels different...it means something more that just having a random fight with a few bandits outside of a tavern. I started using the concept of proactive roleplaying at my in person table and it's been great. Having each player give me goals for their character means that I can take those goals and create side quests that are custom made for that character. It means that my players are indeed helping me tell the story by bringing their own ideas to the table. I want my players to bring as much of their creativity to the game as they want.

I prep by

Talking out loud to myself. I work best when I collaborate, so when this isn't possible I like to talk out loud. Something about doing that helps with being creative for me. I also like to have a good look at any monsters I'll be running to make sure I understand the best way to utilize them.

Rules are...

Meant to be tampered with. The rule of cool is the MOST important rule!

When it comes to voices

you don't have to worry about a full on perfect accent. Little things like volume, whispering, slowing down or speeding up your speech and inflection can be just as good!

Michael's ideal table

An all inclusive safe space where everyone feels comfortable and is able to relax, have fun and leave the real world behind for a while. The more roleplaying the better! As a DM I love watching my players roleplay with each other.

I love it when a player

Puts the story and the other players at the table ahead of themselves. A Player that actively tries to get everyone else involved is the dream for me as a GM. It's one thing for me to encourage role playing. But when another player does things to encourage it...that's the best!
