About Casey
Hey there! I’m a 36-year-old GM with about 20 years of dice-slinging and world-building under my belt. I grew up in Montana but have called Seattle home for the last eight years. Through Black Shield Productions, I’ve been running games professionally (or at least quasi-professionally) for over a decade—everything from convention marathons to cozy weekend retreats to birthday bash one-shots. With more than 3,000 hours on Roll20, I’ve seen it all—epic heroics, tragic fumbles, and enough chaotic hijinks to fill a saga. I love every style of play, from old-school dungeon delves to serious intrigue to laugh-out-loud comedy sessions. I’m new to StartPlaying, but I can’t wait to meet new players, spin great stories, and make a few legendary memories together!

My favorite books are
I have many, many favorite books, but Streams of Silver by R. A. Salvatore holds a special place for me. It's thanks to this book that I found the world of Faerun and, later, got into D&D!
My favorite system of all Time is
... a relatively unknown system called Epic Roleplaying will always have a special place in my heart. Character creation is fun, the system is unique yet still pretty easy to understand, and the magic system is award-winning.
When I'm not running games I'm...
When I’m not running games, I’m playing in them! I also love video games—right now I’m deep into building roads and ports in Valheim. I work in Seattle hosting nonprofit volunteer events to bring people together for good causes.
How Casey runs games
I have pretty eclectic tastes when it comes to running games. One week I might be hosting a wild, off-the-rails comedyfest, and the next, a gritty, grounded campaign where players manage the day-to-day affairs of a small feudal estate. I’ve turned Battletech’s tactical minis combat into a full-blown role-playing experience, and I’ve also run sessions where not a single die gets rolled. Ultimately, the vibe of the game is determined by both the GM AND the Players. I hope to find the right style to fit our game.

I deal with rules issues by...
Keeping in mind that the goal is for everyone to have a good time. That said, if a rule seems vague to me, I might do some internet searching for other sources or threads for extra insight. If a player can make a solid argument for a specific interpretation, then I'm game to give it a shot.
Casey's ideal table
Over the years, I’ve welcomed just about every type of player to my table. I’ve tamed chaos monkeys, debated with rules lawyers, overloaded power gamers, and grumbled alongside grognards. Whatever your style, you’re likely in good company. I love players who bring curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to try new things; people who care about the story we’re telling together and who delight in surprising me (and each other) with clever ideas. Most importantly, I value players who CREATE FUN for themselves and for everyone around them. If you enjoy collaborating, experimenting, and lifting up the group’s experience, then you’ll fit right in at my table.

Uh... Brandon Sanderson, Improv, watching the GM being silly on webcam.
I love it when a player
I love it when a player follows the subtle threads of the story and, entirely on their own, stumbles into deeper truths, hidden connections, or long-buried secrets. There’s nothing more satisfying than watching a player naturally hit the dramatic beats without any nudging from me.
I think metagaming...
Is, for better or worse, an unavoidable part of the game. Rather than fight it, I like to have fun with it - playing with what players think they know and sometimes weaving the metagame directly into the narrative. When used thoughtfully, it can add a surprising extra dimension to the story.
