About Caramel

Hi, I'm Mel! By day I am a designer, artist, and dicemaker, and now, by night, a Game Master for hire. I've been GMing home games since late 2020, and since then I've grown to love worldbuilding projects that I can share with friends as immersive TTRPGs. TTRPGs quickly became my social lifeline at the height of the pandemic. I'd been the first to invite my friends to take the plunge (many of us started with minimal knowledge or following of the media,) so the GM seat was where I sat. Ever since then, the game nights became a beacon of respite, the checkpoint for me to strive for every week. It got me through busy college days, and busier days as a full-time product designer. Since I started as a GM and not a player, I guess that qualified me as a generation 0 GM. And lucky that I am to have the bragging rights for that, because ever since then our then-small group grew into a small community because they, in turn, wanted to become GMs too! And I had first dibs on their seats!! I was eating well!!! I feel like TTRPGs and GMing is one of those hobbies that has a relatively low barrier of entry, but by the stars the ceiling felt so high. There's so much that one can learn and improve in their craft. It encouraged me to sign up for games with strangers, even when my community had plenty of games running; I felt compelled to explore beyond my comfort zone -- a feeling that I don't get as much with my other, more formally taught disciplines.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Articulate, expressive, and happy!

When I'm not running games I'm...

a product designer, artist, and dicemaker! Though they still do revolve around TTRPGs, as that latter profession might imply.

How Caramel runs games

I'm a narrative-first GM. I love to roleplay, love to immerse the players and myself in the world -- to breathe life into it, make it believable, and if only for a moment transport ourselves there. I place great emphasis on bespoke narrative arcs for my players, weaving their role and place in the greater, interactive ecosystem. I love finding new ways of spotlighting PCs, enabling their growth and development, giving them the space and time and attention to truly shine. Not to mention the bonds they grow with one another. I loooove settings that blend both science fiction and fantasy, magic and technology, worldly wonder and whimsy -- the best of both worlds. It tickles my brain to see a place where fusion reactors and airships co-exist alongside wizards and knights. I've experimented with a few systems in my time, though nowadays I've found a comfortable mastery in Dungeon World. I like the rules to be simpler and flexible, so that they don't get in the way of the PCs doing cool and fun stuff, or that we can make up our own rules that fit easily with the base game. The easier it is for players to learn and practice, the better they can focus on roleplay. I may get carried away with unnecessarily verbose descriptions, forget my prep in crucial moments, have my train of thoughts be derailed mid-sentence. But I can promise you I will be your character's and stories' biggest fan, your enabler in this addicting hobby, and an excitable and welcoming host.
