About Alan

I am a D&D loving person that plays any chance that I can. I enjoy running creative, fun, sandbox style games and often invoke the rule of cool. Communication and fun for everyone at the table are my top priorities whether I am DMing here, for my friends at our monthly game, or at the DM club that I started for the students at the High School I teach at. I have a homebrew world, Aethercombe, that most of my campaigns take place in, but I'm always looking for additions to it that stem from my players in-game.

I got started GMing...

When my wife got pregnant with our first child and couldn't continue DMing our group. I took over, fell in love with it, and never looked back.

My favorite books are

Lord of the Rings (Return of the King is my favorite) 39 Clues (Original Series)

When I'm not running games I'm...

Spending time with my wife and three kids. I'm a huge family man and love hanging out and having fun with them.

How Alan runs games

I love creative play and creative solutions. I strive to be inclusive of all players at the table and make sure the spotlight stays on the party as a whole. Rule of cool and using spells or resources in creative ways are always OK to ask about, but there are a few things that I will have to politely decline the use of (mostly social media trends such as the peasant railgun). Overall, I'm here to have fun and make sure that you have fun as well.

Alan's ideal table

My table is open to all people and personalities. I like for everyone to be respectful and have fun. I run a mix of both social and combat encounters and love for players to be creative and engaged. I am not a fan of metagaming in any form and love to throw custom monsters at my players to keep veterans and beginners alike, on their toes.

Featured Prompts

I love it when a player

Asks to use a spell or resource in an unconventional way.

I think metagaming...

Is using knowledge that your character wouldn't have to make decisions or try to influence another player's actions.

My table is not the place for...

Metagamers, people who need to be in control at all times, or spotlight hogs.
