I got started GMing...

Back in junior high, using Dungeons and Dragons 3rd edition (not even 3.5 yet!) I've been running games ever since. I've used a variety of systems, and have always focused on whatever the players most want out of a game.

My favorite books are

"A Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula K. Leguin "Brigador" by Bradley Buckmaster "A Memory Called Empire" by Arkady Martine "Katabasis" by R.F. Kuang

My favorite system of all Time is

Lancer, followed very closely by Monster of the Week! Lancer is the game I go to for complex and tactical combat (and also giant robots punching each other in the face), and Monster of the Week is by far my absolute favourite RP heavy system!

How Benjamin runs games

I enjoy telling a variety of stories and particularly like to focus on player expectations and goals, whether it's story telling or tactical combat. I run an LGBTQIA+ friendly table, and like to ensure that all players feel they can let me know their concerns and that my players feel safe and respected.

I deal with rules issues by...

When deaingl with issues regarding the rules, I always first go to the rulebook. If it's still unclear, I like to take a minute or two to do a quick search online to see if there's any official ruling, otherwise I make the best decision I can and take time after the game to look things up.

I prep by

Reviewing my notes from the previous session, and checking our progress through my campaign. I try to have a general idea of what direction a campaign is going, but I like to give my players as much agency as is reasonably possible.

When it comes to voices

I'm not the best, but I have some funny ones! A favourite recurring Monster of the Week NPC of mine is "Gavintorblax the Lowly," or "Gavin" for short, an imp desk clerk from Hell with a particular taste for seagulls and who has a thick gravely accent.

Benjamin's ideal table

My table style is flexible, but I want players to be first and foremost respectful of myself and other players. I can run a variety of different games, from combat-heavy to entirely roleplay focused. I always take my player's preferences and concerns to mind when deciding what kind of a game I plan to run. Players who come to my table should be respectful of other players, ready at the start of the session (or as ready as reasonably possible) and be willing to yield table time to other players when it's not their turn.

I love it when a player

Works with me to help build the world or make the game better in some way. Background NPCs, story hooks, and taking the initiative in roleplay or combat scenarios is always preferred by me.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Don't engage with the story or hooks I've put right in front of them. I don't mind players taking things in an unexpected direction, but this works best when players tell me their plans between sessions, rather than charging off without giving me time to prepare!

I think min/maxing...

Is totally fine, so long as you are playing to the Rules as Intended as much as possible! Just don't judge other players who choose not to min/max in favour of making interesting or unusual builds instead, and make sure to work *with* your party!
