About Rocky

Hi! I'm a 40ish, trans masc, non-binary nerd that has gotten into Dungeons and Dragons hard as an adult. I started as a player but quickly started GMing games. It's important to me that people that are frequently marginalized feel comfortable at my table. I will always support my players and am always open to making changes so the humans in this game are not unintentionally hurt while trying to have fun. I've always loved writing and crafting my own campaigns, helping integrate players stories, and running NPCs has been a great outlet for that interest. It's been a wonderful creative process that I am so grateful to have in my life. GMing has also helped me grow as a person in ways I never could have expected. I have always been grateful that the first campaign I was in was run by a great GM that really showed me what TTRPGs can be. So I am always happy to help new players learn the game. I run difficult combat and sometimes complex stories but as long as a player is willing to learn they are always welcome at my table.

My favorite shows/movies are

I don't really have general favorites. I have favorites for different moods and genres. Some movies, in no specific order, that I love and rewatch are the entirety of Lord of the Rings (extended edition), The Decent, Waterworld, The Martian, Tremors (the entire series).

People are always surprised when I tell them

That I have worked as an independent nail artist. I went to school and for a few years made art on peoples nails. It a rough industry but a wonderful artistic medium.

When I'm not running games I'm...

There's a strong chance I am either playing video games or managing our 5 animals. My partner and I exclusively adopt animals that have challenges. Over the years we have grown our home & skills so that we can adopt the animals that have no more chances. It's a lot of work but it's so rewarding.

How Rocky runs games

Customization and story-telling is the main thing that first drew me to TTRPGs and DnD specifically. I am an avid gamer but even the most customizable video games will never touch TTRPGs because the only limit is your imagination and the worlds rules. Because of this I am all about letting players make the characters they want. As long as a player is willing to spend the time communicating about it I am open to any homebrew. I will probably adjust things for my style or the world themes but I will always try to help you make your vision. I always make combat difficult and death is a possibility but I never create a scenario that players can't beat or flee from. For me consequences are part of the pull of role-play. It feels better when you really have to think about your decisions. I love the rule of cool and will try and make what you are attempting work but I also always keep balance in mind. One example is a player wanted to use Create or Destroy water on a water elemental. It would be unbalanced to let the spell straight up destroy the elemental but it could damage a part of it with a possible side-effect.

I deal with rules issues by...

My general rule is that any rules issue has to be resolved in a few minutes in session or we discuss it more later. I will always hear out the players argument and discuss our differences but if that can't be done quickly we will default to my decision and discuss more later.

My games focus on...

Story-telling. In my style this includes combat. I love combat and I find it most fun when it's challenging but there are many ways to win. For example convincing the enemy to stand down or frightening a scared enemy away.

When it comes to voices

I ask for your patience! I am working on expanding my voice abilities but at the moment I really only have a few choices. I default to, as my players call it, cowboy accent if I can't think of anything else. I think voices and accents help make NPCs unique so it's a skill I'm building.

Rocky's ideal table

I prefer a table where the players can have fun and make jokes while also respecting the more serious moments. I think my style lends to a fairly energetic back a forth among everyone and fast decision making. Whether that's good or bad will depend on what the player is looking for in a table. Ultimately it's the players that most define the table culture but I certainly have my preferences and naturally my GM style is going to influence who wants to be part of my tables.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

Actions having consequences. I treat the table as a collaborative space so I'm never just trying to punish but I do think the story is more compelling with consequences. Fights are hard, NPCs may resent your actions, death is possible.

I think metagaming...

is not as big as issue as some others may find it. Players should be able to make decisions based on what their character knows and not what they know. Otherwise how does a GM or experienced player ever find a game? Most metagaming issues are really communication or player issues.

I think min/maxing...

is only an issue if the GM makes it one. If a player is powerful I make the fights harder. If a player is disproportionally powerful compared to everyone else I'll give the other players a useful weapon or armor. You can always rebalance things so everyone gets to make the character they want.
