About Amalthyon
Hi, I'm Amalthyon! You can also call me Oak. I'm a very player focused GM and enjoy relying on character backstory for big plot points and rely heavily on a network of safety tools to ensure everyone is comfortable and having a good time. Roleplay and dynamic combats are my bread and butter. Mystery and intrigue are my go to frameworks for plot, and combats usually have more than one objective. I love creating a safe space out of character that welcomes player characters to engage in emotionally intense scenes and conflicts. Aftercare and frequent check ins are key for providing the comfort and safety needed! I have over a decade of experience GMing dungeons and dragons. I started out with 3.5 when I was a teenager and moved to 5e shortly after it was published. I've been dabbling with the 2024 edition in home games since it was published as well, but 5e is really where I live. I also print and paint fully customizable minis, statuettes, and keepsakes! This is an additional optional feature. Shipping is free, ask me about sizes and pricing!

I got started GMing...
in high school when a group of friends and I wanted to try playing Dungeons and Dragons. No one else wanted to run the game so I stayed up for three days reading every book I could find and writing (probably too much) plot. I've been hooked ever since!
My favorite shows/movies are
Movies: The Last Unicorn, The Princess Bride, and Girl Interrupted Shows: Shameless, Supernatural, New Girl, and The Good Place
When I'm not running games I'm...
Spending time with my family, listening to D&D/Improv/True Crime podcasts, playing video games, and painting!
How Amalthyon runs games
Roleplay and dynamic combat are the most important pillars of gameplay to me. I tend to do one session of roleplay, one session of combat. For roleplay and story, I like to do a lot of intrigue and mystery. For combat, I like to have an objective other than just hack and slash. I do include fights that can't be "won" by damage alone, you may need to get the objective and get out. I also enjoy a good puzzle or riddle every now and again but try to avoid overly complicated/ complex puzzles that can leave everyone feeling stumped and bogged down. I'm no stranger to homebrew or the Rule of Cool, and strongly encourage reskinning/reflavoring to curate the exact aesthetic my players are looking for!

I deal with rules issues by...
ruling on the side of fun, then looking further into it between sessions to avoid bogging down time.
When it comes to voices
I have a couple in my arsenal and I'm working on adding more. I'm by no means a voice actor, but I bring a distinction to each NPC by focusing on vibes, attitude, and vocabulary instead of regional accents.
Amalthyon's ideal table
Do you want to experience the full range of human emotion? Laugh, cry, and scream into the void all in one session? This might be the table for you. Passion and comedy go hand in hand, in my experience. We enjoy a nice flow between intense dramatic scenes and extremely silly moments. Seeing/hearing my players light up at cool magic items, belly laugh at silly little guys, and sob over fictional family trauma are why I'm a GM.

I love it when a player
comes up with a creative solution to a problem. Don't let the specific text of a spell or ability dissuade you! Creative problem solving and big swings are what I live for! Just ask, the worst I can say is no, and I'll only say no if it takes away from the fun of other players.
My table is not the place for...
anyone that doesn't want to foster a sense of community and companionship. Your fellow players are part of your team (and so am I, even when I pretend to be an evil villain I'm still rooting for team PC.)
