About Hunter

As an Author, Podcaster, and General Ne’er-Do-Well, I gravitated towards TTRPGs as a kid because my head was always in another world and I love sharing those worlds with other people.

I got started GMing...

Mostly because nobody else around wanted to… In all honesty I have always loved telling stories and combining that with spending time with friends makes the whole experience that much better.

My favorite books are

The entirety of the Discworld series, the Wheel of Time series, and anything by Tolkien. I grew up on Tolkien, WoT showed a different way to make an epic story that broke the typical fantasy mold, and Discworld showed that you didn’t have to sacrifice whimsy and humor to tell a heavy, serious story.

My favorite system of all Time is

Probably Fantasy AGE. It’s not quite as easy to grasp as most d20 systems and isn’t as rules light as other systems but it has a unique way of handling all aspects of the game that makes it feel more real and immersive.

How Hunter runs games

I’m big on stories that feel real and get players immersed. I want serious plots but enjoy the silliness of characters approaching situations like real people and not just heroic adventurers. I like crunchy combat and mechanics, but I also try to fudge things or hand wave them when I notice the mechanics start to bog things down and spoil everyone's fun. I’m not one to yes/and everything my players want to do, but I’m a firm believer in using “no, but” when I can’t allow a given idea. I will do my best to give players funny NPCs to befriend and make use of, and I love working to personalize stories to fit the player characters.

I once ran a session...

Where the players were naughty kids getting revenge on Santa for bringing them coal. It was chaotic and wild and definitely something I would do again in a heartbeat.

Rules are...

There to provide structure, but shouldn’t restrict gameplay without good reason.

When it comes to voices

I love trying to do voices. I love practicing accents and trying to pitch my voice to add character and immersion to my games, and giving characters that personal touch helps players know who’s who.

Hunter's ideal table

I like a solid mix of silly and serious appropriate to the setting of the game. I like rules because they provide a solid framework for the game to function but I also like to stretch and do things outside the lines for the sake of creativity; rules should support the game, not restrict it.

I love it when a player

Gives me a solid reason for trying something not covered in the rules. Things that should be possible but aren’t technically allowed under the rules let all of us stretch our mental muscles and make the game more creative.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Immediately begin complaining about rules instead of asking why the rules are there and trying to understand what’s going on. I have rules for a reason and I’m happy to explain and try to smooth things out, but if they’re that big of a problem I’d prefer you not play than to stay and complain.

My perfect party mix is

A decent balance of Strength, Skill, and Magic. Give me a front line warrior, a skill monkey, and a mage of any sort and I can make any adventure work to their advantage.
