About merwins

Hi, I'm Merwin. I've played and run TTRPGs and story games since 1984. My publishing imprint, One Foot In, can be found exclusively on itch.io. Offerings includes resources on character development, mystery design, and comedy. My publications and the scenarios I run present uniquely original and experimental ideas. Above all other genres, I prefer horror, with an emphasis on psychological horror. I'm a people pleaser dedicated to mental and emotional engagement in every session. My gaming goal is to provide the opportunity for a roleplaying experience you'll remember favorably.

When I'm not running games I'm...

When not running games, I'm playing games, reading books, or watching television. An embarrassing amount of television. But at least it television that takes full advantage of the medium.

How merwins runs games

I prioritize better gaming. My game table runs like a relaxed professional environment--open to all, expectations and non-negotiable topics presented up front. I am there to teach, learn, and have fun, and expect others to do likewise. I listen to my players. Sensitive topics are ramped up gradually. All players are given equal air time. Every session ends with a debrief, so all of us (including me) can learn to be better gamers. Player characters are agents of change in my scenarios; as protagonists, they make things happen, but their actions have consequences. Storytelling and character development take priority over tactical play, but there's plenty of narrative action to be had.

My favorite trope is...

My favorite trope is splitting the party, and not just in horror scenarios. I think there are many unrealized unique opportunities for individual characters to shine when they're on their own.

merwins's ideal table

I run a very relaxed table that protects both players and characters. A good sense of humor and an awareness of the human condition is critical. When everyone communicates tersely, and provides detail on request, there's a more brisk sense of action. Players should be attentive to the limitations of technology and mindful of interrupting others. Text chat channels can be used for "background" conversations.

I love it when a player

I love it when a player grasps the theme, mood, and objectives of a game and can portray them through character actions. It helps reveal designer intent and shows the uniqueness of the game itself.
