What is D&D Beyond Maps?

D&D Beyond Maps is the 2D virtual map hub hosted on D&D Beyond’s website. It is in Alpha as of 2024, and is not to be confused with D&D’s upcoming 3D map platform. D&D Beyond Maps is instead focused on convenience. It allows users to instantly port maps and monsters over from whatever digital content they own on the platform. So basically, if you own Dungeon of the Mad Mage on D&D Beyond, you can traverse the Mad Mage’s dungeon in Maps.

What Features Does D&D Beyond Maps Have?

In its Alpha form, D&D Beyond Maps is limited to just the basics. The DM can pick a map from any campaigns or sourcebooks they own and put them onscreen for all to see. They can also find free basic maps like grass fields or mushroom cave.

‍

Once the map is displayed, the DM can cover it up with “fog” which darkens the area from a player perspective. This is how one can achieve the effect of moving from room to room in a dungeon, uncovering mysteries as they go. The DM and players can also draw on the map to indicate things, ping areas of interest, and use a ruler to measure distances during combat.

‍

Probably the best part about Maps is that it is loaded with monsters from every book the host owns on D&D Beyond. No more needing to upload art and make tokens; player characters, pets, and monsters are already there complete with their art from the books. This includes baddies from third-party content like Critical Role or Kobold Press’ Tome of Beasts.

Hosting a session D&D Beyond Maps is restricted to Master Tier subscribers. However, these subscribers can share maps access with any D&D Beyond account user.
