About the adventure

This "short" campaign is suitable for both new and veteran players. There will be a free Session Zero for character creation and meeting your party members. After Session Zero, there will be 8-10 sessions. The setting: The base setting will be created by me, but suggestions and contributions are always welcome! I enjoy the collaborative process of creating a world. The base setting is a "classic" fantasy world. We are in the lands of Voria. Led by humans, this is a land where all sorts of cultures come together. The capital city, the Sapitol, is known as the world's centre of culture and arts. It is here that our journey begins. The Problem: This will be the overarching problem that we need to deal with. However, your character may have their own problems and goals that we can incorporate into the story. It has been raining non-stop for weeks now, which is quite unusual for this part of the world. Rivers are overflowing and crops are starting to rot. Something must be done! The Sapitol has sent out a request to everyone: they are looking for brave people willing to board the first aircraft in history and take to the skies. Your Character: Your character will start this journey at level 2. It is important to me that you play as someone willing to be part of a team. In my experience, the Lone Wolf archetype is difficult to incorporate into a story. We will use the standard DnD classes as options you can choose from. Other than that, pretty much any race is allowed (even homebrewed ones). If you would like your character to possess one magic item, please let me know and we can work something out. Otherwise, they will start with standard equipment. Last requirement: Give your character a backstory. It does not have to be long (and no longer than one page). Let me know this backstory. This will enable me to tailor the experience more to your character. This can/should also be a collaborative process where you take the lead.

About me

Hey! I'm Florian. I started playing DnD in 2021 and have been running my own campaigns as a Dungeon Master (DM) since 2023. My job as a high school teacher has given me an understanding of how to keep a group engaged and interested. I run my DnD sessions and my classrooms in a similar way (and no, I don't mean boring maths equations). I engage people by giving them plenty of opportunities to contribute and shape the session together. I also believe it's important for people to come up with their own solutions rather than just being told everything. As part of my education, I studied theatre education. While I wouldn't describe myself as an actor, I know the basics and enjoy bringing characters to life through voice and demeanour. I don't have any experience with other systems besides DnD, but I have seen them used in campaigns I have watched, such as Kids on Brooms and Vampire: The Masquerade. I love DMing/GMing and want to do more of it. So let's work together and create amazing worlds!

Character creation

Creating your character

During Session Zero on Discord, we will create our characters (2nd level) on DnD Beyond, so create a free account there beforehand if possible. It would be great if you had an idea of what kind of character you would like to play. I am open to anything. If you need help/ideas with this, please let me know. You will only have basic starting items, so no magical items in general. However, if there's something special you'd like, please let me know and we can discuss it. After Session Zero, I will contact you on Discord regarding your character's backstory. You can go into as much detail as you like, I would advise you to wait until after Session Zero. For my GM stile I like to know where the characters at the table come from and where they wanna go. Whether this is just part of your character's journey or if it also includes the resolution to their drive is up to you.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Please complete these steps: 1. Create/Log in to Your Accounts - Discord: We will use this for voice chat. You need a free account. - D&D Beyond: We will use this for your character sheet and digital dice rolling and map. You need a free account. 2. Set Up Your Gear - A working microphone and headphones are required (headphones prevent echo/feedback during the game). - A webcam is completely optional. - No software downloads are needed. Both Discord and D&D Beyond can run directly in your web browser. 3. Join the Discord Server - After joining the game on StartPlaying, you should see a Discord invite link. - Once on the server, look out for a direct message from me. Let me know what your StartPlaying name is (names are often different, which makes things tricky for me), so I know "where to put you" on Discord. 4. Join the campaign and prepare your character - Klick on the link here on startplaying to join the campaign. Or I will send it to you via Discord. - We will create our characters together during the first session (Session Zero). Make sure your character is finalized (after Session Zero) and added to the D&D Beyond campaign at least 24 hours before the first game. So I can look it over one last time. If you have any questions, message me here or on Discord.

What Florian brings to the table

I have experience of being a DM, more on that you find on my profile. I will provide on-boarding help, general help for new players, the Discord server (where we will also have music playing) and the DnD Beyond setup. Now would be a good time to ask you to leave me a review on StartPlaying after our session. This would be a great help to me in the long run. It is not a must, but I would really appreciate it.

Homebrew rules

We'll come to those when the time comes. We mostly play by the "official" rules, but I am a fan of the rule of cool. I'm a big fan of Dimension 20, so that's the kind of vibe I'm going for, if you're familiar with it.

How Florian creates a safe table

Please arrive 10 minutes before the session starts! This will allow us to ensure that everyone is on Discord/DnD Beyond and that everything is working. Session Zero outline: - First we will introduce everyone and their DnD history, after that we go over some rules at the table (about 15 min). - Then we start the character discussion, where everyone shares their ideas for their character. We will support one another - there are no bad ideas! (max 30 min). - Creating characters on DnD Beyond and discussing potential backstories. (max 1h). - We come to an end. Regular Session outline: - We go over some rules at the table. Most importantly: - If a scene ever gets too intense or crosses a line for you, just type 'X' in the Discord chat (or say it out loud). We will instantly stop the scene, no explanation needed, and pivot the story. - We will start the session and then take a 5–10 minute break around every hour. - After the session, I would like to have a short debriefing talk (max. 10 minutes). This is just to make sure that everyone had a good time and to get some feedback.
