About the adventure
I'm a new to the site and would like to run a short campaign, session 0-3, to work out any technical issues and figure out how the site works before starting any paid games. With that being said, if everyone is enjoying themselves and wants to keep the game going, we can continue to a paid $20 per session campaign aferward. The campaign is set in the homebrew world of Estrid, with its own unique pantheon, history, racial backgrounds, and factions. The world is living and will adjust and grow based on player choices. I like to build the story of the campaign from these big choices and the player's chosen backgrounds. You have been summoned to the farming town of Murrayfield in the Oculus Hegemony to form a new mercenary landsknecht team. The landsknecht form the body of the Sovereign's army. They serve the land and people, and often themselves when they can. Some members join voluntarily and others as part of a punishment for crimes committed. Follow your orders or disobey and go rogue. Explore the world freely and journey as you'd like. Your adventure awaits!

About me
I'm a journeyman level GM who has been running games for two years, but has been building my own fantasy world for nearly five, with custom factions, lore and racial flavors. I like to make my games dynamic, with player choices being the main driving force for the campaign and making adjustments from there.

Creating your character
We'll start the campaign at level three and build them in d&d beyond. Feel free to create a character prior to session 0, but we'll create them then if you haven't. Hit points and stats will be determined by dice roll. The campaign world has some unique racial flavors (eg. elven culture has a very norse flair and hates wizards for religious reasons, orcs and goblins were formed from an ancient curse put upon humans and halflings, etc.) and background lore that will be provided during session 0 based upon player choices.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You'll need a discord and dnd beyond account in order to play. Once you join, i'll send an invite to the discord server and dnd beyond campaign.
What Jacob brings to the table
l like to give my players a sense of freedom and the ability to explore the world as they see fit. I enjoy the world building aspect of being a GM and like to make adjustments to the story based upon the players choices. I try and have a good mix of combat and role play, but it largely depends on what you as players decide to do, rush in or negotiate. I use a mix of d&d 5 and 5.5 editions based upon what makes more sense or seems more fun. I favor dice rolls and rewarding player choices, so I prefer using contested rolls for contested checks rather than preset DCs and allow flanking to give advantage. If a rule hasn't come up yet in the campaign, then I'll explain my interpretation of it going forward and come to a consensus in the moment.
Homebrew rules
For non-magical things, we'll break down the individual components and make checks on each of those. We'll say one component per 8 hours of work. I'll set the DC based on what you're making and scale the item on your success (eg. 3 successes with a nat 20 and you make a +1 weapon, or 3 just barely successes and your pistol has a chance to fail to fire). Counts as magical for warforged INT based attacks. For wands, you need to find wood blessed by Estrid as a base component and then either know the spell yourself or have a scroll to enchant with it. Certain magical items can only be created with dwarven Arkose ore in a dwarven forge. Flanking allows advantage on melee attacks. DC for contested checks is based upon contested dice rolls.

How Jacob creates a safe table
Violence, gore, some blood rituals and kidnapping/abductions are subject matter likely to come up during play. I don't go into or find it necessary to go heavily into details for it. For example, elven religion uses blood within sacred groves. If the party chooses to engage with this religious practice, there may be description of ritual. If it goes beyond a player's comfort zone, they can either verbally say something or message me on discord to fade past the scene. After sessions, I'll stay on discord for a bit for a debrief to discuss the session and any player feedback they'd like to share. I'm also available on discord for messaging or to schedule a private voice chat about any concerns.
