About the adventure

Dekara – A World Scarred by Magic, Yet Not Without Wonder Once, Dekara was a realm where magic soared as freely as the birds in the sky — vibrant, plentiful, and unshackled. Floating citadels drifted above vast forests, elementals toiled alongside artisans, and every race, from dragonborn to tiefling, from elf to orc, lived with the arcane as a constant companion. But that age is gone. One thousand years ago, an experiment of impossible ambition — arcane, divine, or both — went catastrophically wrong. The world still remembers the name: The Catechism. It was no mere accident, but a reckoning. A convulsion of the weave itself, a surge of raw, uncontrolled energy that exploded across the land. Wild magic storms tore through cities and mountains, burning away the stable foundations of spellcraft. Magic didn’t die… but it fled, fractured, and turned feral. In the centuries since, arcane magic has become rare and unstable. Most mortals fear it. Some revere it. Only a few dare to wield it — and fewer still survive long enough to master it. In the scholarly city of Caelmont, the last arcane university still trains those with talent in the arts of wizardry, sorcery, and bardic lore — but even there, every spell cast is a gamble with unseen forces. The gods, too, were shaken by the Catechism. Though still worshiped — those of the Forgotten Realms pantheon hold sway — their physical essences were sealed from the material plane, unreachable by miracles or manifestation. Clerics, druids, and paladins still receive divine power, but the gods cannot walk the world. Their voices are whispers now, heard only in prayer or prophecy. Yet something stirs. Wild magic storms have begun to appear again — first in remote places, then closer to trade roads and coastlines. Their touch warps land, creatures, even time itself. Reports of unnatural lights and arcane surges have reached the great port of Freeport, a coastal trade city on the Western Shores, where adventurers gather and rumors move faster than ships. It is here, beneath foreign banners and salt-stained sails, that a new journey begins. The world is changing once more...

About me

Hello! My name is Ben and welcome to an adventure with me! I have been playing tabletop roleplaying games off-and-on for about twenty years, mostly with Dungeons and Dragons and Pathfinder. I have been DMing for about five years at this point, and am excited to branch out to more tables. I love helping new players learn about the game and welcome any and all to my games, as long as they do not engage in harmful behavior to themselves, other players, or the game itself. I try to stick fairly close to the rules, but also do not like to get stuck in the tiny details like rations or ammo, and most of the time if you can tell me how your character would try to accomplish something, I'll at least let you roll for it!

Character creation

Creating your character

Once a player has signed up for the campaign, I will contact them with a link to the campaign on DNDBeyond, which they can access by creating a free DNDBeyond account if they do not already have one. Creating a character in this campaign will allow you to pull from all of the material which I have purchased for use. We will be starting at level one and when generating stats you may use the Standard Array, Point Buy, or Roll for them. We will use these level one characters in Session Zero to familiarize all players with the Abilities, Actions/Bonus Actions, and characteristics of their character before beginning the Campaign itself. I will also provide a lore document for this setting with custom character hooks to help inspire your backstories and familiarize you with the history of the world. We will be using Discord for Voice chat during games

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need to create: DND Beyond account (free accounts can access all of my purchased materials through the campaign) Discord Account (free to create, you will receive an invite to my server when you join) Players will also need to have a microphone to participate in Discord Voice Chat during sessions

What Ben brings to the table

I provide immersive audio through the use of PocketBard in Discord, as well as vibrant descriptions of your environment and a variety of character voices to keep the immersion flowing. Players will also have access to all of the materials which I have purchased through DNDBeyond for the entirety of the campaign. I try to stick to the rules in order to maintain consistency, but I also love to use Rule-of-Cool in moments where it is appropriate (if my players can justify why it could happen, I will most likely allow it)

Homebrew rules

Although there are not many, here are my rules and rulings that will remain constant across all games: Drinking a potion requires a Bonus Action; feeding it to someone else is an action Critical Hits deal MAX Damage PLUS a dice roll Counterspell will remain a level-based spell, not DC as written in 2024 rules Any time you roll Hit Dice for healing, you CANNOT roll a one, they must be re-rolled Heroic Inspiration will be awarded at the beginning of each session, you may use it for any d20 roll that you make in that session Heroic Inspiration can be shared with someone else ONLY IF you are in the same scene Luck Points can be used on any d20 roll that impacts you (Attacks, Saving Throws, Skill Checks), but cannot be shared.

Safety

How Ben creates a safe table

We will be utilizing breaks as needed/appropriate, discuss each others comfort zones during session zero, and I will explain my Red/Yellow/Green system of player comfort/need. After each session I will be available on Discord for at least thirty minutes if anyone needs to debrief, ask questions, or just to chat!
