About the adventure

There are many in the land of Unbroken whose stories become legend. Brave heroes, con artists, lawmen, bandits, warchiefs, poets. Your name was never destined to be listed among theirs. Your story has always been a simple one. Not to say you live a life without hardship. Whatever brought you to Sundown Valley, one thing can be certain: just making it to the next day can be a heroic feat. This is a low-level, low-magic, low-stakes, Play-by-Post campaign which centers around your attempts to build a life out on the prairie. Yes, wizards, and dragons, and maybe even dungeons lie out there in the world somewhere, but for you, those are distant notions. You and your companions lead a small caravan of weary travelers who have, each for their own various reasons, uprooted themselves in search of a new life. Together, you will have the opportunity of deciding the fate of the near-abandoned town of Wheatley's Rest at the eastern edge of Sundown Valley. The game will focus on your character's hopes and fears, the relationships you build with each other, and the ones you build with a slowly growing populace as you expand your town and maybe, someday, even make names for yourselves. Life and death are on the table out here on the frontier. Yes, the fear of a raiding party stumbling upon your little town is very real. But all the more present are the daily fears which threaten to wipe out any community which lets little things slip through the cracks: 🐺 Keep the coyotes out of the chicken coop, and the wolves out of your pastures. 🌽 Save what harvest you need, and find a way to sell the rest. 🦠 Be ever on the lookout for the spread of disease, blight, and rot. ⛈️ Repair the roofs and shutter the windows before the summer storms hit. 🩸 See that the townsfolk settle their petty differences without resorting to violence. ⚖️ Do not allow troublemakers to go unchecked. A little magic goes a long way too. If you are looking for a game that centers around you, that feels rich and lived in, that expands and changes thanks to your collaboration, that leaves space for you to let your character unfold, this is your chance. Let the ever-shifting grasses and wide open skies of Unbroken be the page on which you write a new story.

About me

Hi friends! I've been a professional theatre and TV actor for 20 years, and a role playing fan for nearly as long! However, when video game rpgs could no longer scratch the itch, I dove into ttrpgs in 2017 and haven't looked back. I've run many multi-year campaigns for friends, both in person and online, and I'm excited to make take the leap into professional GMing! Take a look at the Dream Roll Gaming channel on YouTube, a short-lived but very rewarding project I had with a few actor friends of mine. In those videos you can get a sense of my style as a GM. I prefer games with an open-ended world which sets problems for the player characters, and lets the plot unfold as a consequence of their behavior. If you are looking for a space to bring a character to life and to have a hand in crafting a world, I'm your guy.

Character creation

Creating your character

Together via discord, we will create first level characters which fit the setting and the story. We will use 5.5e rules for character creation, we will roll for stats, and you will have access to all the character creation options which I own on DnDBeyond. All official Core and Expanded options are allowed.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Once you join, you will receive the link to my discord server and the dedicated Stories at Sundown channels, as well as a link to the campaign page on DnDBeyond. You will need accounts for both programs.

What Dream Roll DM brings to the table

In all of my games, my first goal is to set a tone and a mood. My only job as a DM is to elicit a feeling in my players. To this end, I pay careful attention to story pacing, and give full commitment to narration and NPC characterization. I am a character-first, story-second, powergamer-third kind of DM. Although I have a deep understanding of the mechanics of the game, I am prepared to bend and break these rules, but only as is necessary to facilitate the tone and narrative. You can always trust that the game will function as you expect, but I'm not afraid to negotiate rulings and allow for edge cases and story-driven exceptions, as long as there is consensus amongst all at the table. First and foremost, I want you to be storytellers! And I'll shape the world around you to help you do just that.

Homebrew rules

Gritty Realism Resting Variant: Short rests last for 8 hours, and a long rest requires 5 days of downtime. Alternate Criticals: Instead of rolling your damage die twice, we will instead treat one of the rolls as max. So, if you crit on 1d8+4, it instead becomes 1d8+8+4. Exhaustion: Every time you drop to zero hit points, you gain one level of exhaustion. Exhaustion can be removed via a short rest. MCDM's Strongholds and Followers: This supplemental book includes rules for settlement-building and for recruiting NPCs as resident crafters, artisans, and even retainers when the need arises.

How Dream Roll DM creates a safe table

Via private DMs, I am always perfectly willing to skip over, retract, or retcon anything which make a player feel unheard, invalidated, or uncomfortable. Nothing happens at my tables unless everyone involved is 100% on board. If there are topics which are not covered in the content warnings which you would like me to know are off the table, feel free.
