About the adventure

Set in the world of Exandria of Critical Role fame, we explore a world of high fantasy adventure to discover its secrets, and our own! This is intended to be a long-term "sandbox" campaign. This means that I am aiming for a minimum of about one year of weekly sessions with room to go well beyond that if we still have story to tell and the players want to keep it going. Additionally, it means that after character creation and a "session zero" (both of which will be free!), the direction the story takes is entirely up to you! You will be free to choose your own destinations and set your own goals- and from this, a grand narrative will be spun! This does not mean you will be directionless, of course- there will be a "main plot" of sorts and other expected trappings for a high fantasy story, but what exactly that plot turns out to be will be greatly influenced by your decisions from the very beginning. We will be playing in the world of Exandria as mentioned, specifically set post-Critical Role Campaign 3 for those of you who follow the canon of the setting established on CR! This allows me lots of creative freedom for new ideas in the setting in ways that interest me most. Of course, no prior knowledge of Exandria or Critical Role is necessary! Looking for an experienced Dungeon Master to take you and a troupe of adventurers on an unforgettable journey? To take the character you build and give them trials to overcome, hardships to face, and a story to tell? Looking to leave a mark on the world, and have that world leave a mark on you? Look no further!

About me

My name's Ruby, I've been Dungeon Mastering the 5th Edition of D&D and other TTRPGs for over a decade, and it is my absolute pleasure to bring you into my fold to give you the game you're looking for. I am a roleplay-focused DM who strives to build engaging, complex characters with my players and integrate them into the world they explore in the most immersive way possible. I want you to feel that the character you play and the characters you meet are real people- so you'll love them for real, and feel a real pain if you lose them. TTRPGs are my love and passion, nothing else comes close. As a DM/GM, I strive to bring immersion, emotional investment, and joy to every player at my table through fun, interesting, challenging adventures, evocative and thrilling encounters, and a deep investment in you as a player and in your character. These games are about telling stories together, and that is always my priority. Not just stories, but living stories, in real worlds- or at least, worlds that feel real to us. I accomplish this by ensuring that no campaign is ever linear or pre-written. There are plot points, pre-ordained events, and similar of course, but they are all subject to change, as is every facet of the world in which we play, based on your actions and their consequences during play. At the end of the day, the story and the characters are what is most important. If you love a role-playing focused game, mine are the perfect choice! I run LGBTQ+ friendly tables and worlds. Please keep this in mind, and be mindful and respectful of others' identities and pronouns at the table- including that of their characters. I am also vehemently anti-Generative AI, and will not allow its use at my table.

Character creation

Creating your character

Session Zero will be where we go over character concepts and creation, from both a narrative and mechanical perspective. Some of this will be done out in the open together, and some will be done 1 on 1. I consider it a valuable part of the story to not know everything about each other's characters right from the jump, as this provides room for fun reveals and secrets to discover over the course of the campaign as you learn about each other (and even yourselves)! I generally prefer sticking to official sources, but am open to third party or homebrew content. Any Critical Role content (i.e. the Blood Hunter class, or player-facing content from the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount and the Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn) are considered "official" for the purposes of this campaign, as it is set in the Critical Role world of Exandria.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Have a microphone, a discord account, a D&D Beyond account, and maybe start with the inkling of a character concept if you don't have one already! Everything else can be covered in Session 0.

What Ruby brings to the table

The VTT used will be Foundry VTT, through a cloud-hosted server I pay for for our use. It requires no account or anything of the sort, just the link I provide. Using Foundry allows me to create a smoother and more immersive experience via dynamic lighting and similar flashy effects like animations and weather effects, ambient soundscapes, and dynamic music. I offer a good amount (though by no means all) content on D&D Beyond, which will also be where we host our characters. If there is any content a player wishes to use that I happen not to have access to, I will commit the time and effort to making it available (either via my own purchase, or by recreating it in D&D Beyond's homebrew system myself). I will also be setting up a Discord server for us, which we will use for voice chat during the game. Video is not required (though I will always suggest it, and am happy to embrace it if it's preferred), but voice/a microphone is. I love doing voices and I want you all to hear them!

Homebrew rules

The homebrew rules I use are largely dependent on the table. I do, however, have one specific rule I won't give up; I allow the use of the 2014 and the 2024 rulesets. If you are playing a 2024 Cleric, you will NOT use the 2024 version of Divine Intervention, instead using the 2014 version.

Safety

How Ruby creates a safe table

Regarding breaks and debriefings, both are incorporated into our scheduled play time. A break of at least 10 minutes and no longer than 20 minutes is held at the roughly halfway point of every session, and the final minutes of the session are used for debriefings, which is where we may discuss issues with bleed, our aftercare, and our stars and wishes if any are relevant. The session zero is free and a mandatory part of any campaign I run, where we will discuss character creation and narrative elements as well as safety tools and their use. X, N, & O cards will be handled digitally, ideally in a manner that is anonymous to other players. I maintain that I prefer they not be anonymous to me, so that I can ensure a check-in and discussion with the player who might have had an issue during play afterwards and ensure their safety and comfort, as well as to allow me the opportunity to apologize should I have made a mistake or overstepped.
