About the adventure

To the victor goes the spoils, but what happens when nobody wins? A whole lot of resentment, and a new type of business opportunity… The proud Kingdom of Galifar once spanned the entire continent of Khorvaire. The five nations that made up the kingdom each claimed their section of the continent. When the king died without a clear successor, the nations devolved into a war that lasted over one hundred years. Each of the five original nations eroded away as new nations arose and claimed their lands. The war was poised to last indefinitely until a magical cataclysm of unimaginable power destroyed the entire nation of Cyre, leaving it a broken, warped, fog encased wasteland. Fear brought the nations to the negotiating table, and fear ended the war with the Treaty of Thronehold. Twelve nations were recognized by the treaty. Another nation has since sought recognition, and two remote and dangerous provinces lay unclaimed by any nation. No one is happy about how the war ended. Fear brought them to their knees. Borders were forced upon the nations, cities were left on the wrong side of the lines. Even the Dragonmarked Houses - the main force of mercantile and military goods across the continent, are having to find their way in a new era of tenuous peace. Deep seeded anger and resentment stirs under a thin veneer of civility. With no clear victor, everyone feels like losers. And if one-hundred years of war taught the people anything, it was how to hold a grudge. A new market has developed that values individuals with the ability and willingness to help settle some of these grudges. Hidden amongst the many Inquisitive and Detective agencies are a limited number of groups willing to resolve your problem for a hefty fee. Three main agencies vie for business: Answers Incorporated, Troubleshooters Anonymous, and The Covenant of Reprisal. Prospective customers don’t know all three agencies belong to the Fixer Syndicate, a coalition of like-minded individuals dedicated to resolving issues for profit. Most are former assassins and stealth operatives from the war, no longer needed by their nations. Others are simply psychopaths, sociopaths, or apatheopaths that need a profitable outlet. No matter where you fall on that spectrum, there’s a place for you in The Fixer Syndicate.

About me

Hello my friends! I am Uncle Casey, the storyteller for what I hope is your next adventure. I do my best to run a welcoming, safe, and accessible table; I believe creating felt safety encourages deeper, more enjoyable game experiences. To that end, I require my players to be open and affirming of everyone’s right to exist and be who they are without judgement. For characters I don’t limit species, and players are free to make their characters as self-representative (or not) as they choose. I have resources available (Unlimited Heroics, Combat Wheelchair, etc.) that can serve as a guide for any non-core mechanics you’d like to integrate. I want you to feel free to be you. Or be someone completely different. It’s your game. Me, a Brief History: (Reading optional) I started playing TTRPG's during junior high and high school, back in the 80's and early 90's. I joined a friend's D&D game, then started DMing for my friends. We tried out Talislanta, Rifts, Cyberpunk, Vampire, Aliens, Robotech and a few I've probably forgotten. Then life happened. I eventually earned a degree in theatre and a certification in stage combat choreography, I caught an arrow to my knee (got married), did community, amateur and professional theatre, adopted our children, left theatre to work with foster and adoptive families, that turned I into educating families about trauma and it's effects on our brains and bodies. I started playing D&D again in 2015 with 5e - my dice were literally older than the other players at the table. (side-note: I am a notorious dice goblin). It wasn't long until I started DMing again, both in-person and online. I've met some amazing people from around the world playing D&D online, as well as my fair share of cautionary tales. My strengths as a DM - I'm open and caring and belive in self-agency for players and characters. I'm big into backstories and love integrating them into campaigns. I'm always down to work with players, embellishing and expanding their character histories. Do you want a convoluted, world-shaking secret from your past threaten to rip apart the very fabric of reality? I'm in. Of course less dramatic backstories are welcome as well - some players like to focus on what's ahead of them, rather than what's in the past. I am flexible. I create as much of an open-world environment as possible, encouraging player agency and choice. I'm good at rolling with a sudden shift in party objectives. I encourage players, especially experienced players, to immerse themselves in their characters' moment, know what they know, and experience the game with fresh eyes. Yes, you probably are steeped in game lore and monster stats, and how refreshing would it be to just lose yourself in the moment and forget the meta-knowledge in the moment?

Character creation

Creating your character

Level 3 Characters will be created in the DndBeyond campaign to ensure full access to published content. More detailed character creation guides will be available after joining the campaign - the basics - no restrictions on species, no restrictions on classes with one caveat - there are no black-powder weapons in my worlds. It's a personal choice. Weapons are modified to deal force damage. If you're planning on playing a Gunslinger class (from Valda's) or otherwise integrating a firearm into your character, please be aware of this modification. We roll for stats - since both point buy and standard array give you 72 points towards your stats I have players roll two groups of stats on DndBeyond, both need to add up to at least 72 points. Re-roll any groups below 72. Pick one of the two groups, no mixing and matching between the two.

Gunslinger, Artificer, Rogue, and Paladin (kinda?)

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players will need accounts for DndBeyond, Discord, and Roll 20. Free accounts are perfectly fine. They will also need the Beyond20 browser extension, which allows integration of rolls and info between DndBeyond and Roll20.

What Storytime with Uncle Casey brings to the table

I stick close to the Rules as Written because I believe it keeps the game balanced and fair for all players. Rule of Cool is used for situations that don't change the base mechanics of the game. I do use character voices and I keep them culturally appropriate (for a white male to use). I use a combination of sourced and self-generated maps, and create tokens for all players (with provided images or I can source images for approval). I do use Bastions in my games, and can help new players (and existing players) understand the game mechanics.

Homebrew rules

PC's need to be adults, no children. Physical and Mental maturity. Multiclassing is available starting at level 4 and needs be supported with by the character's development. No taking 1 level of a class just to get a specific feature (Rogue's sneak attack, Barbarian's rage, Bard's Inspiration, etc.) Multiclassing requires a 3 level commitment.

Safety

How Storytime with Uncle Casey creates a safe table

The most important rule I have is being respectful to one another. Everyone at my table has the right be be who they are, and have everyone else respect that. My games are inclusive and welcoming, and a safe place for players to gather together to enjoy this amazing game. To support this goal, I use a Lines, Veils and Preferences survey to I know what to avoid during sessions. And because I just don't want to think about it during my games, I don't use child-endangerment, sexual violence or harassment, or animal cruelty, nor do I allow my players to engage in those behaviors with their Characters. We use digital safety cards on Roll20, and I'm always available via DM on Discord during the game and through the week.
