About the adventure

The River runs dark... Close to a thousand years have passed since Sakar freed his Dark Master from it's imprisonment in Snake Mountain. Now he sets upon his Throne of Fallen Skulls as God King Draven, ruler of the Sorcerer Kings (and Queens) and all the known lands. All that remains of what was once a lush and peaceful land is barren deserts and scattered patches of vegetation. The wars, that erupted when the god and goddess abandoned the realm, used forbidden magics that drained the very life from the wold around the Sorcerer Kings and Queens; as they battled for dominance. What the wars left behind were lands devoid of forests and metals. The arcane magic used in this way became known as "Defiled Magik". It tainted the ley lines of arcane magic forever. Mages not sanctioned, and controlled, by the Sorcery Kings/Queens, is forbidden...punishable by horrid deaths as "Spell Batteries"; living batteries consummed by the ruling Sorcerers to cast their spells. Now things have settled into divided wastelands ruled over by the victors (if you can call them that), and all bow before the one remaining god...Draven. The God King Draven rules with a fist of terror! None dare oppose him; those that do become a part of his Throne of the Fallen Skulls. The lands are governed by that law of the strongest. If you're not the one meting out a beating, you're the one receiving it. Slavers roam the lands in search of fresh flesh to peddle. Arenas, scattered around the vast desert lands, offer a respite for the populace as gladiators (willing and unwilling) fight for the crowds. Scattered communities struggle to survive amidst harsh laws and rulers. The clergy, devoid of their god and goddess, have become not more than those that ply for power and authority; as many of it's highest ranked members no longer have any celestial magics. The true faithful find themselves bound within their Order by those that while lacking a connection to the god and goddess have rule over the faithful. What clergy do have the power to channel divine magics find themselves, all to often, on the bad side of administrators that look upon them with jealous eyes. Very few clerics with any ability in divine magics remain in the world. Many scholars make theory that their powers are being granted by remaining minions of the absentee deities. It seems no one knows why the God and Goddess abandoned their faithful. Many speculate that maybe the Arcane Wars some how disrupted their celestial forms, or weakened them to the point of near death. Others fear that the God King Draven had something to do with their disappearance. perhaps he has them imprisoned, draining them to raise himself to godhood. But does anyone really know? Turmoil within the hierarchy of the clergy has erupted with the gods return! Administrators unwilling to relinquish power have caused a schism within the faith. The gods themselves struggle to reclaim lost worship...

About me

I have 31 years of experience in RPGa I began running RPGs at around 13 years old (in 50's now :(::: lol ). I started with G.U.R.P.S and Villains & Vigilantes. From there I moved on to 2nd Edition D&D, Palladium Fantasy RPG, Rifts, T.M.N.T., Robotech, Ninjas & Superspies, Wildcards, Cyberpunk 2020, Heroes Unlimited, Marauder 2107 & various Marvel Comics RPG's, Vampire the Masquerade, Wraith, Mage & Werewolf the Apocalypse (I have run other games over the years that I no longer renumber the titles to). I find great joy in seeing my players having fun in the worlds I have created. I want them to feel their characters are the main characters in a novel or movie. As a DM I get to enjoy the game by seeing my players enjoying the game. That's how I know I'm doing my job as a DM. If the players arenn't having fun; no one is having fun. Outside of TTRPGs I enjoy drawing and car audio, and streaming some of my favorite games. And creating stories and scenarios while listening to music. You can, also, listen to music from my game world on most music streaming services listed as Shadowphage.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will start at level 9 and from the 2014 5e rules. D&D Beyond will be used for characters and the VTT Maps. I have various Homebrew races available to offer more variety for the players. Books I use for the campaign will be shared through D&D Beyond. We will discuss character creation and choices in the first session. Please, create a free D&D Beyond account for easy of gaming.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Please, create (or have) a Discord (with a Mic) and D&D Beyond account. I use Discord and D&D Beyond for the sessions. If you are not familiar with the meaning of a "living world" in TTRPG terminology; please, do take time to Google it. That way you can decide if this style of setting is for you. Other than that bring snacks and smiles? :P

What Shadowphage brings to the table

I will provide access to the books and materials needed for the campaign as well as answering any questions about the game world before we get started. I use the 2014 rules; but the 2024 spells are a bit more balanced now and i tend to lean towards those descriptions (with minor exceptions). A few homebrewed content will be used and discussed as well before we start. I hope you all enjoy.

Homebrew rules

A few house rules are used to maintain variances for my players. Paladin Smites are not a bonus action, unless the spell version is used to alter its type (Thundering etc.). This allows for multi-class builds to work without disrupting either classes core arsenal (Paladin/Rogue for an example). To balance the already weakened Ranger sub-class I have a homebrew subclass and the Beastmaster's animal companion can attack without taking the Ranger's bonus action, as the rules have it. Since an animal companion's attack is no where near as damaging as other classes base features. This allows a player to enjoy playing a ranger like Beast Master without feeling penalized for doing so. I use a more "vitality point" system than the Death Saves system. Its sort of a mix but allows more player control (in some situations). Hopefully, players will enjoy these altercations to the rules.

Safety

How Shadowphage creates a safe table

Players can DM me on Discord if there is an issue or concern. This way no player knows who had the issue and I will do my best to address the issue without bringing any attention to the player. After the session the player who had the issue and i can discuss how the situation will be handled going forward and if they still have concerns over the issue. Also, players should try to keep profanity to a minimum and while slips are bound to happen lets try keeping it clean.
