About the adventure

Welcome to the Yawning Portal, Waterdeep’s most infamous tavern. By day, it’s a place of stories, laughter, and strong ale. But at night, daring adventurers gather around its central well, the legendary passage into dungeons long forgotten. Each descent offers the promise of treasure, glory, and power…but also the certainty of peril. This campaign draws from Tales from the Yawning Portal, a collection of some of the most iconic adventures in D&D history, updated and ready to challenge modern heroes. You’ll face winding caverns, cursed tombs, and ancient fortresses, all packed with clever traps, cunning foes, and mysteries that have claimed countless lives before you. The tone of this game balances heroic adventure with dark danger. I like to focus on exploration, teamwork, and problem-solving, while keeping combat tense and cinematic. Expect a mix of tactical battles, environmental puzzles, and roleplay opportunities; whether you’re bargaining with a suspicious innkeeper, deciphering ancient runes, or outsmarting a dragon. This game is for players who enjoy a classic dungeon crawl feel, but with modern roleplay and storytelling at the table. Whether you’re new to D&D or a veteran, you’ll have chances to shine, grow, and carve your name into the legends whispered above the tavern’s firelight. If you’re ready to raise a glass, take a dare, and plunge into the depths… the Yawning Portal awaits.

Creating your character

Character Creation Guidelines 1. Characters should be created before the first session. This allows us to start playing immediately and ensures everyone is balanced and ready. 2. Starting Level & Equipment Starting Level: Level 1 Starting Equipment: Standard starting equipment from your class and background, plus starting gold for minor purchases. 3. Stats & Abilities Point Buy (recommended) or Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) Rolling for hp or average 4. Sources Use official 5e rulebooks: Player’s Handbook (required) Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything (optional, with GM approval) No homebrew or third-party material unless approved by the GM. 5. Character Creation Location D&D Beyond We’ll review characters before the first session to ensure compatibility with the adventure. 6.
