About the adventure

Love playing D&D, but real life makes it tough to set aside a 3-5 hour block each week? We all know that feeling. Play-by-Post (PbP) might be just the way for you to scratch that D&D itch! If you've ever wanted to try PbP but never knew where to start, this is the game for you! We'll run a short (3 weeks long) campaign that will introduce you to basic PbP practices, common tools & bots used, map programs, and show you how they work together to help you tell your character's story. We'll start with a session 0 where we'll go over how things work, safety tools, and work on character creation. After that, we'll dive into learning how to effectively RP and handle yourself during combat. We'll close out with a one-shot encounter where we'll put it all together & take on the world! Well, not the whole world, but we'll at least start in a tavern and end up bonking some bad guys... small steps, right?

About me

Compelling stories? Heart-stopping character moments and pulse-pounding cliffhangers? World-building that feels real and lived in? These are my passions, and D&D is how I express those passions. I'm Gator, an LGBTQ+ player & GM specializing in play-by-post (PbP) D&D campaigns on Discord. With 40 years of history as a player and over 6 years of experience running a West Marches server & GMing via PbP on a daily basis, I've developed a unique set of skills and tools that help players of all experience levels feel right at home in a PbP campaign. In my campaigns you'll get a chance to fully develop your character and explore the worlds we create together, all from the comfort of your keyboard or phone. I can't wait to meet your character and help them tell their tale!

Character creation

Creating your character

We will work together to create characters during our session 0. As a group we'll figure out how you're rolling for stats, what subclasses might not be approved, etc. Your characters will then be created in D& D Beyond (DDB), and imported into discord.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

• In order to join the server where the campaign is taking place, you'll need to have a Discord Account. • Since all characters will be created in DDB, you'll need to have a D&D Beyond account. • Imagination and eagerness are always welcome at my tables!!

What GM Gator brings to the table

PbP is a unique way of playing that involves some special tools & mechanics. I have almost 10 years of experience with these tools and will show you how they work - Avrae (the fickle dice goddess), Tupperbox, Custom Counters, and much more. I'll help set you up and show you how it all works, including tying in your character sheet from DDB to make your online playing seamless. I'm an experienced writer who will add drama and tension through evocative writing. I'll give you goosebumps one minute and tears of laughter the next, all while threading the seeds of your story into the world. To me, the rules are there to serve the players' stories. I'm somewhere between 'Rules As Intended' and 'Rule of Cool'. Both have their place, and as long as we're all clear and consistent going in, then your story can take center stage!

Homebrew rules

I have a few homebrew rules: 1) Crits on Attack Rolls There's nothing worse than getting a crit and rolling lousy on your damage roll. To avoid that I run the following: • Roll one dice (or set of) as normal, then add max damage for the crit dice. *Example: Rogue hand crossbow attack (with sneak attack): • regular: 1d8 (weapon) + 2d6 (sa) +4 • critical: 1d8 (weapon) + 2d6 (sa) +4, +8 +12 (critical damage) 2) Drinking Potions • Drinking a potion is a bonus action., • Administering a potion to an ally is an action., • You may spend your entire action to drink a health potion, giving you max healing.
