About me

You walk into the wolves' den tavern and see a man behind the bar. his beard and bald head are eye catching but what really stands out is the group of six people clustered around him rolling dice. they laugh as he slips in and out of character so seamlessly it's as if the NPCs were really there. I'm the founder and head GM of a collaborative group of awesome creators called the wolves den tavern! I'm here to take you away to somewhere fantastical! Sit down! Have a drink and check out my campaigns!

Chris's voices and overall dming are on point, but after playing his games week after week, his strength is tension IMO. His games press your characters into discomfort, and thus create extremely memorable experiences. It is like you are on the precipice of a cliff, doing everything you can to not fall off. This is by far the best DND I have ever played. Beyond that, the community he has built (that you will be invited to), is extremely strong. There are 6 days a week in which I am not playing in his games, but I still almost daily am interacting with not only my own group but others who he has brought together with the shared interest of DND.

What can I say about Chris? Chris is about to make me fall of the edge of my seat, make me past out from holding my breath to long wondering if we will survive or not, if we can overcome the challenge. Chris is an amazing DM who is full of experience and holds a world of knowledge of D&D. His demeanor makes you feel welcome and you can feel his love for what his and doing and making everyone have a great time. He has been patient with me as I haven't in a decade or so and getting my groove back. I am looking to play many of many sessions and champagnes with him.

I have loved being in a campaign with Chris. It's truly an immersive experience with his sound effects and voices. As a new player he's really helped me break out of my shell and role play a bit more. Combat is present, and it's run efficiently. I was worried with 6 players I would feel overwhelmed or that combat would take a long time, but it's run very well and everyone is part of a great team. The only downside is it's ruined other campaigns because none of them are as good as this one lol.

I’ve been playing with Chris since early last year (2021). I’ve gone through the Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign and just recently finished Curse of Strahd. Chris is thorough, expressive, and knowledgeable. He does a great job bringing this world to life both in the narrative and the voices of the NPCs we meet. He’s great for RP and is flexible and creative when we (his players) chose chaos. He’s a fantastic DM and I’m excited to see what’s next.

This adventure was awesome! The party was very welcoming even when I had a full blown conversation with my wife which they all heard. We kicked @$$ and took names, a grand time was had by all and I might have found my permanent Saturday party.

Character creation
Creating your character

We will have a “session 0” where characters are created and the game will be introduced. This session will be the only free session. during this time safety tools will also be discussed, something which is particularly important in a module which revolves around horror.

What to expect
Preparing for the session

Little preparation is needed from the players. They are encouraged to think of the type of character they like and to familiarize themselves with the forgotten realms setting but neither is a requirement. you will need a discord account (https://discord.gg/GYk7kWC2NT) and a roll20 account.

What Chris Van Der Sluys brings to the table

Safety
How Chris Van Der Sluys creates a safe table

Curse of strahd is a very well written horror module however it may not be suitable for some types of players due to its adult themes. these include Gothic horror, body horror, cosmic horror, and folk horror. horror tropes from other media are highly prevalent. If a player has trauma relating to being watched/followed/stalked or are triggered by violence against a particular type of person (such as children or animals for example), or something similar please let the dm know so that it can be scaled back. If the idea of an npc being appropriately romantically attracted to your character is off limits let the dm know. violence between familial npcs is referenced within this module. immoral acts done to corpses are referenced in this module. unhealthy obsessive romantic interest is also depicted in this module. Heavy racism against fantasy races is depicted frequently in this module, including possibly against the players, for the purpose of setting exposition and setting tone. If this makes a player uncomfortable the dm can heavily scale back the module's intended exposition. Additionally the Vistani, a population of humans in the setting are heavily portrayed as similar to the real life Roma ethnic group, including the historical mistreatment and prejudice that the general population displayed toward them. If a player is not comfortable with the intended story exposition the dm can heavily scale it back.
