About the adventure

First Session Free! You have been recruited by an eccentric wizard to accompany him on a quest to explore the fabled island of Hofu, a land filled with fantastic monsters and legendary treasure. He has discovered a map that he believes points to the location of an artifact of tremendous power. You will assume the roles of heroes (or opportunistic adventurers seeking loot) just starting your careers. Ahead, lies your journey towards greatness or glorious death, facing new and ever greater challenges as you explore the region. This campaign will proceed through 10th level, with characters gaining a level approximately every other session (depending on the activities of the group). Good role-playing, creativity, and teamwork will be rewarded.

About me

Hail and well met! I have been playing and running RPGs for over 40 years and currently DM and play in several D&D 5e campaigns live and online. I create home-brew worlds rich in lore and full of unique monsters and scenarios to challenge players and their characters so that they can become the legendary heroes they are destined to be--or to die glorious deaths that will be remembered in song.

Character creation

Creating your character

Ideally, you should at least have a solid character concept before the first session. Experienced players should be able to flesh out their characters' details once the session starts. Less experienced players should have a (mostly) complete character before the first session. Things such as background details and personality specifics are something we can develop over time through role play. If you have any questions about character creation, message me and I'll be glad to help. I also have several pre-made characters ready for use if you like. I believe Player Characters should be larger-than-life heroes. Ability scores are generated as follows: start with one 18, then roll 4d6 (drop the lowest) for the other five, arrange them however you like. I find it best for role-play if your character has at least one below average ability score. Everyone will start at 1st level. You are heroes just beginning your journey towards your destiny. Only Players Handbook races and classes are available unless you get prior approval. If you have a cool character concept, we can probably make it work.

The current party

Join an expedition to the fabled Isle of Hofu, a land teeming with savage monsters and lost treasures from ancient civilizations. The island is home to various native humanoid races which are not know for their hospitality towards outsiders. Here, your skills will be tested as you try to find the lost temple of Oya'Afu as well as a way back off the island to civilization.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Must Haves: Internet connection, Discord, Microphone Almost Must Have: (free) D&D Beyond account--this will make character creation much easier Nice to Haves: Webcam (it makes it easier for everyone if we can read each other's faces and see hand gestures), 2 screens (or 1 screen large enough to display the battlemap or other handouts and Discord separately) Please contact me with your character concept so I can help ensure your character will be survivable and useful! I will send you a link to the D&D Beyond campaign so you'll have access to all the options available. There are pre-generated characters in the campaign link you can reference to get an idea for your character, or you can use and/or modify one of those characters.

What Bill Lynch brings to the table

I own most of the WotC (Wizards of the Coast) 5th Edition (2014) material on D&D Beyond and you also will have access to a wide array of home-brew feats, spells, and other player options (if appropriate to the campaign). We will use Discord for voice and video. I use Foundry VTT for the battle map and make custom maps (using DungeonDraft and Dungeon Alchemist) and use some maps from Forgotten Adventures. There will be ambient background sounds to help create an immersive environment (you can turn the sound down or off if you find it distracting). I start using RAW (Rules as Written), primarily for the benefit of you, the players. As we all get comfortable with each other's play styles and expectations, I will allow more Rule of Cool. The world is logically consistent, so if something doesn't make sense to your characters, there is a reason for it. This could be a clue that will help you make an important discovery. You are free to attempt anything you want, but your actions have consequences. If you're an experienced player, you know what that means. If you're new, I'll try to make sure you--as a player--have an understanding of what your character would know about the world to prevent you from doing something foolish (at least without understanding that what you're about to attempt might go very badly).

Homebrew rules

A wide array of homebrew backgrounds, subclasses, spells, and magic items are available to you, the players, and you will face a multitude of homebrew monsters. I typically use a variety of homebrew rules, but unless we all agree on a modification I will stick to the standard (2014) rule set.

Safety

How Bill Lynch creates a safe table

This is a campaign set in a fantasy medieval world, so there are all sorts of possible traumatizing events that can occur. Any evil man has committed prior to the modern age is possible, and some evils that man had not been able to commit prior to industrialization are possible because of the presence of magic. That being said, the goal of the campaign is for the PCs to fight against the evil present in the world and overcome it. It is entirely possible that the PCs will fail, but you are (larger-than-life) heroes and thus have a better chance of success than most. Our first session will start with a brief Session Zero, so we can go over the ground rules. If you have any areas of concern or fears that you need to not be present (lines), please message me before the first session. I'll let you know if it's possible to run the campaign without that. If so, I will add it to the lines and modify the listing. Any sex or any deaths of innocents will he handled "offscreen" (veiled). X, N, and O cards can be offered on video (if you have a webcam), or you can send it digitally to me or the entire group. Wishes and stars are strongly encouraged at any time and can be offered via a channel on the Discord server (for the whole group to see) or to me directly.
