About me
Hi folks! I'm Tom! And Dungeons & Dragons is my greatest passion. Perhaps that is similar to yourself, or maybe you are someone who is simply curious and wants to dip their toe into these waters. Regardless, I think weโll get along swimmingly. A veteran on StartPlaying, in terms of Dungeon Mastering accomplishments, I have: ๐ฒ had a published interview by the official D&D magazine โDragon+โ ๐ฒ almost a decade of experience in DMing ๐ฒ interpreted for the popular D&D comedy show โAdventurers Wantedโ at the Edinburgh Fringe ๐ฒ made the odd player cry at my table (in a good way I swear!) Currently, I am Dungeon Mastering full time. What that means is I dedicate myself, 9-5, to making sure that your game is up to scratch, and every game is fully prepared to deliver an epic session. Feel like I may be your kind of DM? Come join a game, or send me a message, and weโll roll some dice! ๐ง

Updated review as I have now been playing with Tom for over three years (we started with Storm King's Thunder and are now trying to work our way through the tricks and traps of the Dungeon of the Mad Mage). Tom has many strengths as a DM (and as far as I can tell, zero weaknesses). He of course knows the rules and can create an immersive world with his descriptions, 'creature' voices and entertaining scenarios but his greatest talent (in my eyes) is letting the game flow and sometimes letting the 'rule of cool' take over to create a real theatrical in-game moment. Awesome stuff. We use Foundry as the VTT and Tom is an expert with it (probably better than the developers themselves!). He includes many different 'modules' in Foundry, all designed to create better effects, better user interfaces and just an overall better playing experience (don't under-estimate how much better the gaming experience is when you have an all-singing/all dancing VTT). Over the three years I can honestly say that the standard/quality/enjoyment level of the sessions has only got better and better and better (and it was a high bar to begin with). If you're an experienced crew looking for a DM or a beginner wanting to join a session you cannot do better than choosing one of Tom's games.
Tom is easily one the best of game masters I have ever had the privilege to play with. If it wasn't for my original crew's dungeon master back in my home state I would probably say he is has been the definitive best. He does a incredible job interweaving plot and characters. Really strikes the right balance of incorporating characters backstories into the overall plot. In general he makes everyone feel at home and is just a wonderful guy to hang out with.
Tom's been our DM for a solid 2.5 years, and man, he's just awesome at it. He's got this knack for storytelling that keeps us all hooked - from casino style heists to game shows to murder mysteries in the same DND campaign. His character voices, especially the dwarvish ones, are just a blast. Seriously, the guy could voice act if he wanted to. What's really cool is how he lets us get creative and somehow works our wildest ideas into the game, making it feel like our story too. And he's a great guy to hang out with, always making the game feel personal by weaving bits of our own stories into the campaign. Playing D&D with Tom isn't just about rolling dice; it's about the laughs, the surprises, and feeling like part of something special. Thanks, Tom, for making our D&D sessions the highlight of the week.
Tom has an amazing way of slinging quick witty banter. Heโs even able to do it between two different NPC, switching back and forth between them for comedic effect. Tom has done a great job of building his worlds on Foundry VTT. When you play he has many cool effects like magic portals or spooky lighting when a demon enters the room. It all feels so smooth that you donโt get pulled out of your immersion by glitching out or having to reload. The best thing that Tom does is keep the game moving. With his mastery of Foundry, the rules, and the roleplay of NPCs there is very little to no โDowntime.โ Iโve found when other DMโs have to look up a rule, find an asset, or check something in the module my attention is lost and I end up on my phone by the time things are resolved. Tomโs games avoid all these โDowntimeโ traps to keep the narrative and fun rolling.
Tom is the DM every player wants. He's a voice actor and story teller. His NPCs are fun but not out of line. He creates a fun atmosphere in which a player can loose themselves. Tom takes it to the next level as a professional which I appreciate. As a paying playing of 4 years, Tom is worth every penny.
Tom creates amazing scenes with music, voices and thoughtful integration of our character backstories into whatever adventure we are on. While totally knowing the rules, he applies the rule of cool in just the perfect time, which creates a fantastic collective storytelling of our escapades. No player is left out and everyone gets their time to shine without feeling any pressure. As a new player, I am completely blown away by the extensive world building beyond just the basic module. Tom goes well beyond expectations...personalized artwork, terrific music, amazing voices and quick witted reactions to all the things we players throw at him. Love that he is my introduction to all that is D&D!
Character creation
Creating your character
Players will be able to make their character directly in Foundry before the game starts. If there is not enough time to do this however, the DM does have pre-made characters from which you can select from.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Players will need an account with both Discord (free to download!) and also Forge https://eu.forge-vtt.com/ (also free!). Players will need a working microphone, and a computer decent enough to play online.
