About the adventure
The lands of Barovia seem forever cursed to live within the shadows of Castle Ravenloft, where the evil vampire, Count Strahd von Zaravich's opressive influence is felt in every corner of life. You and your companions have somehow found yourself transported to this land, unable to escape through the deadly fog that surrounds it. Will you succumb to Strahd's influence, or unite to resist him? He hopes you will choose the latter. After all, so many adventurers before you have failed, but it always amuses him to watch them try.

About me
I'm a full time educator, husband, and father, and a part-time tabletop gamer, comic book nerd and storyteller. I love that games bring people together, and that role playing games transport them together to another world; a world that they shape and define through collaboration, imagination, and a little bit of luck! I've been playing D&D and other table top RPG and wargames for over a decade. I've been a DM for about three years now, mostly in my capacity as an educator, where I run the D&D club for middle and high school students at the school where I work. I love working with players of all ages, and I have seen the incredible power games have in developing social, emotional, and other important life skills in both the young and old! I was looking for ways to do more of that, and one day found an article online about StartPlaying, and decided to give it a try! For me, the four cornerstones of gaming are Fun, Safety, Inclusion and Communication! Fun is the most important because this is, after all, a game! My goal is to always bring the fun to every campaign and session. The rules to any game are vital in providing consistency, fairness, and shared expectations, but they should never get in the way of crafting a fun and memorable story! For example: I may not always be familiar with that homebrew subclass or spell you're interested in trying out, but I sure will try to make it work in the campaign if it's going to make the game more enjoyable for everyone at the table! Safety is key to a good game, especially one that involves role play. Role play is risky, pushing people to step out of their comfort zone and to be vulnerable. My job is to create a safe environment for that to happen. Furthermore, good stories involve conflict. Sometimes that conflict is violence, sometimes it is bigotry, injustice, or inequality. Having said that, my philosophy is that people come to the gaming table for positivity and connection, not for conflict and heartache. I do everything I can to ensure players are comfortable with the content of our adventures, forewarned of potentially triggering scenarios, and treated with kindness by myself and everyone else at the table. Inclusion is what gaming is all about! There is no one who doesn't belong at my table, as long as they aren't out to hurt anyone else. We all have our blind spots, and that includes me, but my experience as an educator, school counselor, and history teacher have taught me to think critically about some of the things we take for granted as "the norm" and work to dismantle false notions in my own thinking and in the way stories are told. My goal is always to think about how a storyline, character or adventure can be viewed from multiple perspectives and presented in a way that treats all people and groups (even fictional ones!) with dignity and respect! Communication is key to making all of the other cornerstones happen! Without open transparency and honest reflection, we can't have fun, be safe, or ensure everyone is included. I like to check in with my players frequently, and am responsive to their needs. I will sometimes make mistakes, say something thoughtless, and even put my foot in my mouth. We all do it! What is important is that we are clear with each other about our boundaries and expectations, and humble enough to hear what others are saying. If at any time I or someone else at the table says or does something that makes someone uncomfortable, I encourage you to send me a private message sharing your concerns. I always strive to be discreet and diplomatic, but can be direct when I need to be. There is seldom a situation that can't be resolved with a little humble, honest, communication! And that's me in a nutshell! I hope you give me a chance and join me on a shared adventure someday soon!

Creating your character
Character creation can happen offline or during our "0 Session." For more experienced players, feel free to create or bring your character with you before we begin playing, though I would ask that you share your character sheet with me ahead of time (either in the D&D Beyond app or as a digital scan) so I can ask questions and ensure it fits within the setting. I am open to customization, but would like the chance to approve them ahead of time. I prefer everyone uses D&DBeyond, but do not require it. For newer players, I can walk you through character creation during our 0 Session, or arrange a time to meet beforehand if you prefer. I can also provide pregenerated characters for anyone who doesn't want to make one. We will begin our campaign with all characters at level 3, but if new players join later in the campaign, they can start at whatever level the rest of the party has reached.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Come with an open mind and a desire to have a good time! You'll also need a working device (computer, phone or tablet) with an internet connection that can handle Discord, and Owlbear Rodeo. D&DBeyond is recommended but not required. Mics on Discord are required, cameras are not. Roll your own dice or use the virtual dice feature found on Owlbear Rodeo or D&DBeyond.

How Bar-D-McFly creates a safe table
My games are built on four pillars: fun, safety, inclusion, and communication! Fun: The reason we all come together to play is to have fun, so that's what we're going to do! I find the rules are an important part of that, because they keep things fair and consistent. However, the "Rule of Cool" is just as important as any rule in any handbook, because we all want our characters to shine! I am open to altering the rules to fit anything that makes the game more fun, as long as it keeps things fair and balanced for everyone. You can expect a healthy balance between combat, exploration, and social interaction for most sessions, but I am open to adapting to what my players prefer. Safety: While conflict is key to good storytelling, and we will certainly be facing a fare share of danger, evil and injustice, no one should come away from a session feeling anxious, unsafe, or unhappy. We gather at the table to uplift and be uplifted! Some players are shy about role play, because it can feel risky and even awkward. I am happy you're here, whether you want to immerse yourself completely into your character, or simply describe to me the things your character says and does, and do little role-playing at all! Inclusion: Everyone is welcome at my table! As long as you are willing to treat others with kindness and respect, this is where you belong. My decade of experience as a Social Studies and Spanish teacher, and as a school counselor, have taught me to value the experiences of others and to examine my own biases. My goal is always to make sure all people and groups (real or in our fictional setting) are represented and treated with dignity and respect. Communication: I am a very open person, and I love to communicate. If a problem, misunderstanding, or concern arises, I want to talk it through until everyone feels comfortable. I can be discreet and diplomatic where needed, or direct if that's what is called for. I have an open door policy, and I welcome communication via Discord, the StartPlaying messaging platform, or any other mode of communication that works for you.
