About the adventure

Do you want to learn how to play DnD? Do you like fun and whimsy? Do you want to play DnD as a frog? If yes, this is the one-shot for you. In this whimsical one-shot, you'll play as the familiars of the wizard Taberknack, whose alchemical experiments have gone dramatically wrong. Explore his fantastical tower, bond with your fellow fuzzy little guys, and face down daunting obstacles like closed doors and snack thieves. Can you save your wizard before he's lost to you forever? This is a great one-shot for beginners—you don't even need a full character sheet to play! Experienced players will also find it delightful. Gameplay will be focused on exploration, problem-solving, and roleplay; combat is possible, but not guaranteed. Expect inclusive, magical, lighthearted fun in this one-shot. Taberknack Tower awaits!

How to prepare

Players absolutely need, before the session: - A familiar stat block and character name - An active Discord account - A working microphone - Headphones, or other way to prevent audio feedback - Some familiarity with Chapters 7-9 of the 2014 D&D Basic Rules ("Using Ability Scores", "Adventuring", and "Combat") - A heart open to whimsy and fun Strongly suggested: - A working webcam - A device with a large screen, e.g. laptop or desktop computer; tablets and mobile phones often have problems with the VTT

What I provide

- Visual aids on Owlbear Rodeo, including NPC art, scenery, and maps if combat occurs - A Discord server for in-game and out-of-game chatting and questions - Immersive ambient music and soundscapes - Interesting puzzles and exploration - A welcoming, inclusive environment - Plenty of opportunities for whimsy and fun

Gameplay details

I'll send out a quick Google Form before the session to inquire about players' limits and preferences. We'll review these limits (anonymized) at the beginning of the session. During the session, we'll use a traffic light system to indicate if anyone needs to stop or check in. Traffic light signals will be available on Owlbear Rodeo, and everyone is also welcome to use this system verbally—or just say "hey, wait, I'd like to check in about that"! Debriefing will occur after gameplay is over, while we're still on the call. Feedback and player safety is very important to me! We'll be using the 2014 ruleset.

How will character creation work

You will create your character by choosing one of the stat blocks listed in the Find Familiar (2014) spell: bat, cat, crab, frog (toad), hawk, lizard, octopus, owl, poisonous snake, fish (quipper), rat, raven, sea horse, spider, or weasel. You should choose your stat block, name your character, and think a little about their personality before the session. You'll be playing a little animal, so silly characters are encouraged, but your character should want to cooperate and work with others! You will NOT be making a normal player character sheet. I'll be available for character creation questions through Discord.
