Waterdeep: Secrets of the hoard
Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign
About the adventure
Welcome to Waterdeep the Crown of the North, the City of Splendors. A jewel of civilization on the Sword Coast, Waterdeep is a place of soaring towers, shadowed alleys, bustling markets, and secrets hidden beneath every cobblestone. It is here, among the noble estates and criminal dens, that your tale begins a tale of gold, glory, and danger in equal measure. Our story opens within the famed Yawning Portal Inn and Tavern, a rowdy, legendary watering hole built atop a well that descends deep into the Undermountain. It is here that fate gathers you a band of ambitious souls drawn together by chance or shared cause. The eccentric and flamboyant Volothamp Geddarm, renowned explorer, author, and teller of tall tales, has a proposition. He offers you a quest one wrapped in mystery and steeped in danger. Take the job, and you'll find yourselves caught in a brewing storm: a bitter, violent conflict between two of Waterdeep’s most dangerous factions. Should you survive the intrigue and complete Volo’s errand, you’ll be well rewarded but that's only the beginning. For somewhere in this vast, sprawling city lies a far greater prize a hidden trove that could change your lives forever, if you're clever and bold enough to claim it before others do. You begin this adventure as friends, fortune-seekers, and dreamers. But as shadows lengthen and the stakes grow higher, you’ll rise from fledgling adventurers to heroes of legend perhaps even to power players in the very game of lords and lies that defines Waterdeep itself. Fame. Fortune. Secrets. Danger. In Waterdeep, the sky isn’t the limit it’s just the beginning. An excellent starting block for new players wishing to learn D&D and more experienced players who would like to try out a new character build from the starting levels. This will be a long running campaign and new players are welcome to join in at any time.
Game style
Rule of Cool (RoC)
“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.
Combat Heavy
“Combat Heavy” games emphasize the combat mechanics within their systems over roleplay or puzzle solving. There are frequent and longer battles with enemies and a greater emphasis on tactical game play.
Roleplay Heavy
“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.
Theater of the Mind
“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.
Players are invited to join at any point in the adventure as there is lots of scope to bring in new characters to the story. Check with me for current party level.
