About the adventure

Enter the Treacherous Subterranes of Derangement—a multi-floor mega dungeon where the unlikeliest of heroes must face near-certain doom. In this homebrew Dungeons & Dragons campaign, you’ll begin with a party of randomly generated 0-level commoners, hopelessly unprepared for the dangers that lurk below. With no heroes or champions to rely on, your characters must brave deadly monsters, intricate traps, and a hostile environment as they descend deeper into the madness. Survival isn't promised—only those with quick wits and clever strategies will endure the descent. This campaign is crafted for players who thrive on unpredictability and are ready to embrace a world where many characters won’t live to tell their tale. As your party claws its way through the dungeon, surviving characters will level up with each floor they conquer, evolving from desperate commoners to hardened survivors. While your starting characters are determined by fate, once you're inside the dungeon, every move is yours to make—giving you full control over how your story unfolds, even if it’s at the cost of a few lives. If you crave the thrill of high-stakes challenges, enjoy testing your survival instincts under pressure, and love campaigns where every decision could be your last, The Treacherous Subterranes of Derangement is calling for you! Will you rise from nothing, or will the dungeon claim your soul? The choice is yours—if you survive long enough to make it.

About me

If you are looking to start an epic story with your quirky character, with a good balance of roleplay and combat encounters, and you appreciate a non-antagonistic relationship between player and DM where your character's autonomy is respected, I am the Dungeon Master for you. I'm very comfortable with the rules of D&D 5e, while also open to house rulings and a general "rule of cool" attitude. My priority when running a campaign is to facilitate a fun experience. I would be honored to run a game for you.

Great start to the campaign, a little combat, a little social RPing, plenty of opportunities for player-driven actions to affect the story.

Loving the start of the campaign so far. Great balance between edge of your seat combat and social role play. Works to include your backstory into the world. Fortunato is very patient with new players and has a knack for making you understand the game, as well as making it easy to learn how to use Fantasy Grounds.

He is a generous god... So the GM is basically the supreme being of the game being run, and some people power-trip on that which makes the game less fun for everyone. The Almighty Fortunato makes sure that everyone has a good time! If a player is trying to work an angle, he will try to help you make it work - but you never know when you'll roll a 1!

Character creation
Creating your character

We will be generating largely-random level-0 characters during Session 0. Attributes and Species will be randomly generated, as well as starting profession. You will be free to choose options based on your generated Species as well as choosing a Background based (however loosely) on your generated profession. We will be using the Dungeons & Dragons 2024 player options.

What to expect
Preparing for the session

We will conduct sessions using Discord (voice-only.) We will do all rolls and combat using Fantasy Grounds Unity. You do not need a license, as my Ultimate license allows for unlimited demo users. You can download the software here: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/

What Fortunato The Bard brings to the table

I offer an immersive D&D experience, using Fantasy Grounds Unity as our Virtual Tabletop (VTT) and Discord for voice chat. I take pride in crafting most of the maps and art elements myself, ensuring that the visual aspect of the game is customized and tailored to the story. While I don't typically use music or soundboards, the focus remains on rich, detailed environments and encounters. As a GM, I am generous with rulings, allowing for creative solutions as long as they don't lead to degenerate gameplay. I consult the rules as written but am flexible if players want to attempt something fun or risky. In terms of roleplay, I follow the lead of the group—some players enjoy deep immersion, while others prefer to keep things light, and I accommodate both styles. My games are a mix of tactical combat and narrative-driven storytelling, with a balance between strategic challenges and cinematic moments.

Homebrew rules

1. Flanking Bonus When a creature is flanked (i.e., two allies are on opposite sides in melee), attackers gain +2 to melee attack rolls against it. 2. Overwhelm Bonus If four or more allies are adjacent to a single enemy in melee combat and at least two are flanking, they gain a +5 to melee attack rolls against that target. This bonus replaces the flanking bonus; they do not stack. 3. Standing from Prone Standing up from prone costs 15 feet of movement instead of the standard half movement speed. 4. Potion Use Bonus Action: Drink a potion for a normal roll of its healing amount. Action: Drink a potion and heal the maximum possible amount.
