About the adventure

The world of Vayl is at once a primordial wasteland surrounding a delicate shell of civilization. The peoples of Vayl war with each other as they contend with a world not wholly suited to humanoid survival. Monstrous dangers, mystical sites of creation, and the ruins of previous attempts at civilization await discovery. Aside from the presence of everyday dangers, the world is at war with itself. The elements that make up existence have fought each other since the Breaking. A cataclysmic event, centuries ago, that changed the face of Vayl forever. In this open world campaign, we will be focused around one of these ancient battlefields. A landlocked freshwater ocean known as the Frozen Sea. A perpetually frozen expanse of water, nestled within the subtropical equator of Vayl. The Frozen Sea is home to many undiscovered wonders and unimaginable dangers. It's glistening expanse draws adventure seekers. The towns and cities located on its coasts draw maritime merchants. And the promise of ill gotten gains draws pirates and buccaneers of all sorts. Which will you be? During this campaign, character choices shape the story that is told. There are vast expanses of the region to explore, discover, and overcome. What allies, and enemies, will you choose to make? Will you investigate the origins of the region? Is there anything you can, or will, do to rectify the ancient conflict? Will you be feared, or praised by the others that inhabit the region? Your choices really are limitless. So, let's build your story together.

About me

Hi, I'm Rythem. If you're looking for an experienced GM who is passionate about working with his players to tell a story...hi. Stories of mystery, epic adventure, deception, and maybe even a little romance. I've been storytelling since I was a young man, and have gone on to make it my career to help others tell their stories as well. Working with my players to give their voices a framework with which to build on is what I believe the ultimate calling of a GM is. Join me as we create worlds, or destroy them.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will start at level 1. This campaign will be fairly open world, and as such, character levels could get very high. For stats, use the Point Buy method. At the beginning of the campaign, I will be primarily using the 2014 Player's Handbook rules. These may change as the new 2024 rules become more play tested. This campaign has the potential to see up to level 20 characters. It will depend on how long the players want to keep playing.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

A microphone and internet connection are required. All of the sites and programs I use, including the VTT, work well on mobile. Though they are easier to use with a computer. A camera is not required. Intimate knowledge of the rules is not required, however a willingness to learn is. Lastly, a character backstory is not a must have, but if I get one I will make sure to incorporate it into the campaign in meaningful and memorable ways.

What Rythem brings to the table

A Discord channel for in and out of game talk. Custom maps, soundscapes, and character voice acting. I use Owlbear Rodeo as my VTT of choice. It is easy to use, free, and robust enough to provide me with the tools to provide my players with an enjoyable experience without their need to learn complex systems.

Homebrew rules

Homebrew mechanics, monsters, items, and abilities may be introduced at the DM's discretion as fits the setting and story.

How Rythem creates a safe table

A Discord link and DND Beyond Campaign link will be provided upon signup. VTT links will be provided before game sessions. During the free session 0, we will go over my expectations for all of my players, and what my players can expect from me. I will also provide a more detailed account of how the campaign will function, what you can look forward to, and what type of experience I am hoping to provide you.
